So you have just got an invite to your friends wedding, but donâ??t have a clue what to wear. Proper wedding guest attire varies greatly depending on the style of the wedding itself.
 The Big Clue â?? Invitation
Your invitation will be your lifeline. Here you will find all the details for the big day. If it simply says dress code on there, then youâ??ll be fine. However, if itâ??s a little more discreet, then look at the whole style of the invitation. If itâ??s flowery and decorative, then this will be the scene for the wedding. If itâ??s more of a jokey invitation itâ??s best to say that you would be fine in smart casual.Â
Where is the Wedding?
Take another look at the invitation and see where the location of the wedding is going to be.
Outside
If the wedding is outside then donâ??t wear anything too floaty, because if itâ??s a windy day your dress will be blowing all over the place which will be rather embarrassing. If you know itâ??s going to be on grass or even sand, then stay away from heels. Whilst heels will look lovely, they will only get stuck in the mud. Opt for a thicker heeled shoe, or even a pair of satin style ballerina pumps.
 Inside
If the wedding is inside, then go for something a lot dressier, perhaps wear a floaty dress, this will enable you to move freely when having a dance on the dance floor.
A Daytime Wedding
So the wedding is in the daytime, try wearing a floral style dress, this will look ultra feminine for the daytime. A nice stylish skirt and a blouse/fancy top will also be great for a daytime wedding. Try to stay away from a dark coloured suit; this will only look like youâ??re going to the office for a day at work. Pick out lighter colours.
An Evening Wedding
The key thing to remember is to dress as if you are going out for a meal with your partner. Go for a nice dress, a Little Black Dress is always a popular choice. A cocktail dress is also a perfect choice as it allows you to dance freely. For an evening wedding there is also no harm in wearing darker colours such as black and steel grey.
You can also choose to wear an occasion hatof fascinator.
The Donâ??ts
People make the same mistakes when going to weddings by wearing things that are either too dressy (you donâ??t want to show up the bride) or clothes that just arenâ??t acceptable:
White â?? this will only upstage the bride and therefore leave you feeling a lot more overdressed than you really need to be.
Black â?? do not wear black to a daytime wedding; opt for lighter and brighter colours.
Jeans â?? are an absolute no no. Unless it says on the invitation â??Wear Jeansâ?? then you really mustnâ??t.
Religiousâ?? if youâ??re attending a religious wedding then do not wear a sleeveless or strapless dress. In some places of worship it is not accesptable to show too much skin. If you do have a strapless dress then cover up with a jacket.
Wearing something torn is also not acceptable; make sure that the dress you want to wear doesnâ??t have a hole in the back. Also make sure that it fits you perfectly.
Shoes are a must have fashion accessory and many women have more than just a few pairs of them. So what shoes should you wear for a special occasion?
 Type of Occasion
First of all, think of the type of event that you are going to. Is it a wedding, birthday party or evening out? What you wear to a wedding will be considerably different to what youâ??ll end up wearing to your friendâ??s garden party. Keep your look feminine but not overdressed for the type of occasion.
Wedding
If youâ??re going to a wedding then think about whether itâ??s going to be inside or outside. If itâ??s inside, then opt for nice heels, not too high that you canâ??t walk in them but high enough to accentuate your legs. If the wedding is outside, then itâ??s best not to wear heels or choose a pair of wedge heels that will go with occasion dresses. Chances are youâ??ll be stood on grass at some point so youâ??ll only end up sinking in to the mud. Opt for a chunkier style heel, or even go for flat, satin ballerina style pumps.
The Birthday Party
If youâ??re off to a birthday party, then check your invite for the dress code, this should give you some idea. Generally, to a birthday party you can wear heels, thereâ??s no need for stilettos but women generally look their best when wearing heels.
A Dinner Date
A dinner date with your partner can leave you wondering what shoes to wear. If youâ??re going to be sat down all evening, donâ??t think that your shoes wonâ??t matter because they do. Maybe opt for less sparkly shoes and go for a pair of plain black heels to go with your dress.
Off to a Ball
If youâ??re off to a very special occasion such as a ball, then you know that what you wear on your feet is equally important as what dress you will wear. As you will be on your feet most of the night, donâ??t go for really high heels that will leave your feet aching afterwards. How about going for flatter heels, but get a lovely glitzy pair that will really be shown off when you enter the limelight.
The Garden Party
Chances are that you will be on grass and heels + grass do not mix very well. Wear a pair of ballerina style pumps, nowadays they come in a variety of different styles and colours and can go with absolutely any outfit you want to wear.
Party in the Summer
If youâ??re having a party in the summer months, then wear a pair of glitzy heeled sandals. They will look ultra feminine whilst making you feel really summery.
 Party in the Winter
A winter party is a difficult one as you want to look great, but want to keep your feet warm at the same time. Wear a pair of sheer or black thick tights with your dress and then wear a nice pair of heeled shoes. Go for shiny ones as this will make you feel more glamorous.
Going to a wedding is such a great opportunity to get dressed up but not everyone relished making the all important decision on what to wear to a wedding. Will I look dressed up enough? Will I look over dressed? Will I feel uncomfortable? Will I be too hot or too cold? are all concerns that people will have when choosing what to wear to a wedding. Each wedding is different bit often a wedding will last right through the afternoon and late into the evening so it is important to choose something to wear that will be really comfortable. For weddings that have an evening party, there is also the decision on whether to get changed and wear something different for the evening.
When choosing what to wear there are really only two rules. Firstly don’t wear white (unless of course you are the bride) and secondly wear what feels right for you. Different weddings may have different dress codes and for weddings with religious ceremonies there may be certain rules or etiquette on what should and should not be worn. If in doubt check with the bride or groom before hand. Usually people will tend to wear something a bit smarter than their everyday wear for a wedding but you should never choose something that feels wrong for you as you will regret it all day.
Suits and dresses are the most popular choices for ladies wedding outfits but you could also wear trouser suits, smart womens trousers with a lovely top or even a pair of smart or tailored shorts with a smart top. The choice is yours and it is up to you to decide which suits your personality and style. Generally speaking ladies wedding suits are a bit different from the basic black, grey or navy suits that you would see in the work place but you could try wearing a neutral coloured suit dressed up with some bright accessories like a scarf or hat.
Dresses are also a great choice as they are so feminine and usually comfortable to wear. Look for dresses in beautiful colours and prints and luxurious fabrics to look ultra stylish. As the weather can sometimes be a little cooler in September, you will probably want to put a little thought into what you will wear to cover up. Shrugs, boleros, wraps and tailored jackets all look really good with dresses.
Many ladies choose to wear hats to weddings. This is very much dependant on your personal taste and if you feel uncomfortable wearing a hat, it is usually perfectly acceptable not to wear one. A modern alternative to hats is a fascinator which usually comprises of feathers attached to hair band or hair clip. You could also do your hair in an elaborate up do with a pretty beaded or jewelled hair clip. In case of windy weather on the big day, it is worth considering investing in a hat pin to securely hold your hat in place.
Weddings are great fun to attend. Not only do you get to see members of your family on one of the happiest days of their life, but you may also get the chance to catch up with family and friends that you have not seen for a while. A wedding is also the perfect opportunity to get dressed up in your best dress and some very stylish accessories. Most weddings and really formal occasions and it is expected that you will look quite smart in some sort of occasion wear. For ladies wedding hats or fascinators are often worn especially by close friends and family of the bride or groom.
Hats are traditionally worn by ladies at weddings but fascinators are a modern alternative to an occassion hat. What you choose to wear will depend very much on your style, the outfit that your wearing and of course how you would like to do you hair.
Ladies Wedding Hats
A hat will look best if you have short hair or long hair worn down. It probably looks slightly more formal than a fascinator and is usually worn by the mother of the bride and mother of the groom as well as other lady guests. A hat is instantly visible and so great to wear if you really want to stand out from the crowd. Tradition dictates that a lady keeps her hat on, including inside the church at a church ceremony, until the mother of the bride removes her hat, this can often be after the speeches. Of course these days many people do not take any notice of traditions. A real benefit of wearing a hat at an outside reception, on a hot day is that it will keep the sun off your face helping to avoid sun burn and a flushed or shiny face from the heat. A hat can look stunning if chosen well. Pick a hat that really compliments your outfit and suits your face shape.
Fascinators
If you would like to wear your hair in a glamorous up do, then a fascinator is the perfect wedding accessory for you. It looks modern and on trend and draws attention to your face and hair. The real benefit to wearing a fascinator is that you will hardly know that you are wearing it. It can be worn all day and evening if you are staying for an evening reception. It eliminates the problem that those wearing hats will have with ‘hat hair’. A fascinator can also look amazing with long or mid length hair worn down or a shorter hair style. Fascinators are usually made of feathers but can also include other decorations like flowers, beads or sequins. They are usually attached with a hair clip, comb or hairband to the top side of the head.
Other Wedding Accessories
For those who like to be a little different and individual, there are plenty of other very stylish wedding accessory alternatives. An ornate or jewelled hair clip can look amazing if you want to go for a simple and stylish look. Hair flowers are also very on trend for this summer and make a colourful, fun and fashionable statement.
Building a stylish and smart wardrobe on a budget is all about adaptability and finding pieces that work in different ways for different occasions. Versatility is the key to getting the maximum wear out of the seasons key looks. Bright bold statement prints are big news this year and are a great choice of versatile and adaptable clothing. A simple shift style dress like this navy contrast round neck bow detailed dress (pictured above) is one of the best ways to work this trend as with this much of a pattern, no further detail is needed. Navy and white are definitely the seasons new answer to monochrome, fresh, strong and bright with a bit of a nautical feel. Short sleeves make this dress perfect for more formal events, work wear or a smart casual look.
The addition of a tailored and white jacket and white hat turn this dress into a striking wedding outfit. A simple pair of navy sandals and a navy handbag are the perfect accessories to finish the outfit off in style. For those who do not like wearing hats, a navy or white fascinator would look a little more low key but equally stylish. A simple pair of earrings or necklace would also look great with this ensemble.
A patterned shift dress is ideal for wearing to work. To turn this navy and white print dress into a smart and stylish work outfit, just add a navy tailored jacket. A navy jacket itself is a great investment as it will go with so many other outfits and is a work wear staple. Navy court shoes and a tan/ neutral coloured handbag will add just the right professional touch to this outfit. If you would like to add some jewellery, a brooch on the lapel of the jacket would look great or stud earrings or a simple chain necklace. If you want to add a bit of fun and colour to your work wear, then why not try adding a bright red handbag? Bright red lipstick and nail varnish will also finish off this outfit really well.Â
For a really chic but casual daytime look add a bit of colour with a bright short sleeved cardigan. We love this bold red cardigan with really cute polka dot buttons but bright pink, yellow, green and purple would all also work really well. This is the perfect look for work on a casual or dress down Friday, if you want to feel more relaxed but still look smart and stylish. A flat pair of ballet pumps and slouchy handbag add to the relaxed feel of the outfit. Some chunky beads in metallic, white or navy would also look great with this outfit.
A bolero or shrug will turn this dress into instant party outfit. Opt for white or for a more evening feel navy. The frilled edges of this bolero cardigan help to add a sense of occasion and look pretty and graceful at the same time. Navy heels are the ideal footwear for this look with a bit of sparkle if needed. Some really sparkly jewellery or a beautiful sparkly hair clip will look great with this outfit. A gorgeous clutch in either navy, a metallic colour or a contrasting colour like red will really put the icing on the cake for this outfit.
