Layering is a great way to add texture to your outfits.

Plus, practically, allows you to prepare for whatever the changeable British weather decides to throw your way.

There’s a lot you can do with women’s clothing to tailor fashions and designs to your figure and taste.

Start with a linen shirt, and pop enough buttons to show off a great t-shirt, tank-top or bikini top underneath. This looks stylish and relaxed, is practical as you can whip the shirt on or off as necessary, and can be worn at the beach, or for a night out.

Shawls and scarves are a great way to get warm quickly if the sun disappears, whilst providing a dash of colour, an air of style, and help to draw attention to your face.

Leggings under skirts or shorts can be hit and miss, but with the right colours, and right top, this can be a great way to look relaxed and summery whilst staying warm. It’s also great if you’re not massively confident about bearing your legs – just don’t go for neon tights or you’ll end up attracting attention to all the wrong places.

Wearing polo shirts, vests or t-shirts over long-sleeved tops was a staple of grunge fashion in the 1990s, and it hasn’t gone off-trend since. Mainly because it’s so simple and practical to achieve, and can be a great way to accentuate your figure.

For many years, green has been one of the least-favourite colours of the fashion world.

It has traditionally been the hardest colour to sell – but now bright green is lighting up the catwalks.

Don’t be scared of bright colours this summer – the prime minister’s wife has already led the way with a bright green dress at the Scottish fashion awards last week.

Green is all about daring to be different, and works particularly well against tanned skin tones – so it could be the perfect colour to perk up your post-holiday blues.

Dark green can look sapping, so make sure you mix it with a bit of sparkle to stop it seeming dreary, or mix your greens together – choose wisely, mind – to achieve a layered, textured look that’s bound to turn heads.

If you don’t fancy adopting green full-time, it’s still worth considering green for your occasional dresses, to make sure you’re setting the trends at any wedding or party this season.

With barbecue season hotting up, and burgers and sausages sizzling on grills country-wide, there will be plenty of opportunities to enjoy a smoking feast in the evening sunshine.

But it’s worth thinking about what to wear to help you feel cool and relaxed as you eat in the heat.

Unless you’re planning to barbecue late into the evening, it’s best to avoid jeans as you could end up too hot.

A floral, floaty dress with a chunky cardigan or jumper could be the perfect mix of care-free summer style and practical consideration of the weather – you can always lose the cardy if you get too hot!

Try not to wear anything too grand – a barbecue isn’t likely to be as classy as a garden party – so aim for a touch of style but don’t overdress.

The latest fashions shouldn’t be your only consideration – if you’re a particular fan of barbecued ribs, chicken wings and finger food, be sure to grab some serviettes so you don’t end up with sticky fingerprints on your clothes!

When the sun is shining, nothing beats the glow of a flowery summer dress.

Floral patterns are bright, attractive and colourful, and the patterns never seem to go out of fashion.

Styles change, however, so if you’re searching out the perfect floral outfit, shop smart – you can easily find dress shapes that will still be ‘in’ next year.

If you’re feeling bold, you could try going for a bright, block-colour dress with floral accessories, such as bracelets or brooches.

There’s an endless array of petal-powered women’s fashion items, and if you’re not planning to bare your legs this season, a long, flowing flowery skirt could be an ideal way to get into the summer spirit without going overboard.

And remember that adding some colourful sandals or tights will really set off your outfit.

It may seem like a long way off at the moment, but before we know it the summer will be here again, and it will be time to look out those sexy sundresses. Sundresses are going to be hot property for 2011, the make perfect day dresses, so make sure you find a style which suits you, and makes you feel comfortable. The most important aspects in finding the right sundress, is to be aware of your body shape, and where you will be wearing the dress.

There are lots of pretty, feminine styles to choose from with sundresses, including florals and flirtatious maxi dresses. If you consider your body shape, you will find a sundress which flatters you and makes the most of your look. For instance, if you have a pear shaped body, then you might be best to stick to a-line and maxi dresses, as they will skim your larger bottom half and hide problem areas. If you have a slender frame with toned arms and shoulders, then a strapless or halter-neck style will really flatter your body shape, and make the most of your best assets. If you have an ample bust, then a strapless style sundress will also make the most of your shape. You should always wear a strapless bra with this style of dress, as it will help create extra support.

If you are wearing your sundress for the beach, then you can wear it over your bikini, with a pair of flip flops and a sun hat, for a casual, relaxed look. Alternatively, you can team it up with a blazer and clogs, for a look to wear on nights out. Many sundresses are tapered at the waist, which helps to

accentuate this area, and give an impression of a slimmer silhouette. You can also team your sundress with a small waist belt, for a more glamorous and stylish look.

A sundress can also be suitable for work, or when out shopping or for lunch during the day. For a look suitable for work, simply team it up with a cardigan, pair of tights and a subtle pair of shoes. The sundress is so versatile that you can wear it almost anywhere, simply by adding some key accessories to suit the occasion. Betty Draper styles and vivacious, bright colours, are all popular options for this season.

It may seem like a sundress is only suitable for certain times of the year, but you can also wear it during the autumn/winter, depending on how you dress it up. Simply by adding a chunky cardigan, you can instantly create a winter look with your sundress, and also keep yourself warm during the colder months. A pair of tights and biker boots, are also good winter warmers to add to this outfit.

Sundresses have been in fashion for several seasons now, so are a good, inexpensive addition to your wardrobe. The material is so light, that you can have several, different styles to take on holiday with you, and you will be able to create many different looks.

In our last post we talked about seasonless that can save you money by working for all of the seasons. One piece that can be classed as seasonless is the lace top. Whilst lace has been a huge trend this summer, it looks like it will still be going strong for winter and possibly even longer, lets face it lace never really goes out of fashion.

On the autumn winter catwalks lace featured in a big way from the beautiful and elegant maxi length dress at Valentino, Erdem, Roberto Cavalli and Antonio Berardi to the cute low waisted cream dress at Marc by Marc Jacobs, lace shirts with floral collars at Christopher Kane and military detailing at Burberry Prorsum and a lilac lace dress at Miu Miu. As usual black lace was the most common but there were also nude shades, cream, grey, pink and navy. Lace can be so many different things from dark and romantic to pretty and sophisticated. Lace can look modern or vintage depending on how it is worn and each piece of lace has its own beautiful and intricate design.

The perfect way to work this trend for everyday wear is by wearing a simple lace top or a top with lace trim. Lace already has so much detail withing it, there is no need to add any further detail to the clothes, look for lace tops in simple shapes.  Any of the summers lace pieces should easily transfer to the winter and can be worn with a smart cardigan or jacket for an on trend look. Look for lined lace tops or simply layer them with a beautiful camisole top. A lace trimmed top looks great with a pair of smart trousers for work wear but it can also look great with evening trousers for a party or night out.

This Ivory Detail Lace Top will look great for work when worn with smart trousers or for a more casual look when worn with jeans or casual trousers. It is a great way to get a taste of the lace trend without going overboard.

For an smart outfit for the evening team this Lace Evening Tunic with a great pair of black trousers and you have an outfit that will make you look instantly chic.

If you are looking for a really eye catching top for a party take a leaf out of Miuccia Prada’s book with this pink lace top. Stop it from being to sugary by wearing with black tailored trousers and a boyfriend jacket.

One of the most elegant ways to wear lace for the evening this short sleeve lace evening top looks amazing when worn with the matching a line skirt.

Another great lace piece for the evening this lace and jaquard jacket is features a really unique design which incorporates lace and ribbon.

This three quarter sleeve lace top has interesting lace detail around the neckline at the front and the back as well the cuffs. It looks great with a patterned a line skirt.

Whilst most of usually have one set of clothes for the summer and one set of clothes for the winter, there may be some overlap in between seasons, perhaps on those unusally warm autumn days or usually cold spring days. Some clothes will easily lend themselves to just about any season whilst others would be uncomfortably hot or cool and look completely out of place in all seasons other than those for which they were originally intended. Most of us have a high proportion of seasonal items in our wardrobes and some people even swap over the whole of their wardrobes each season.

Seasonless clothes are also great for bridging the gap between seasons. They work really well for those in between months when neither summer or winter clothes seem ideal and it is always difficult to know what to wear.

There are however some great benefits in filling your wardrobe with seasonless clothes, not least that you will spend much less money and have a greater selection of clothes to choose from at any one time. You can also probably afford to spend a little bit more in a seasonless piece of clothing based on the fact that you are likely to get a lot more wear out of it.

So how do you find seasonless clothes? there are probably not really any clothes shops that specialise in selling seasonless clothes but if you look carefully in both the summer and winter ranges, you should be able to find some clothes that would work for both.

When looking for seasonless clothes you should pay close attention to the colour, style and fabric. Lighter colours tend to be more suited to the summer and darker colours to the winter. By choosing colours in between the two you can easily wear them for both seasons. Neutral colours work particularly well for seasonless clothes as they can be dressed up and brightened up with accessories according to the season. Bright colours also work really well, if you are wearing a dress, think about which colours will look good with both bare legs for summer and opaques in black or another colour for winter.

For a piece of clothing to be seasonless, it needs to be a medium weight fabric. Too thick and it will look out of place and be too hot in the summer and too thin and it will be too flimsy for the winter. Jersey is quite a good option for both seasons as it can be easily layered for the cooler weather but is also quite thin for the summer.

Finally when looking for the perfect seasonless wardrobe, you should look at the style of clothes. certain styles lend themselves to certain seasons. For example a mini skirt may be great for the winter with a pair of thick tights but not so suitable for the summer if you don’t like revealing too much bare leg. Generally day dresses in simple styles work well for all of the seasons. They can be worn over a long sleeved top for the winter and with a cardigan on the coldest of days. Tights can also be added or removed depending on the temperature.

They are perfect for holidays, days at the beach, long walks and just about any other summer activity. Many of us have trouble choosing the right pair of trousers or shorts to wear for the summer, but there is definitely an option for everyone, even those who don’t like showing their legs off too much.

Light weight summer trousers

For some of us shorts or cropped trousers are just not an option for a variety of reasons. Light weight summer trousers are a cool summer option. An elasticated or draw string waist make them ultra comfortable and the waist band can be covered with a top or t shirt. Light weight trousers are the best option for wearing with a longer tunic style of top for an elegant outfit. These ivory white summer trousers are ideal for wearing with a range of coloured tops including navy, red and purple and multi colour prints. Â

Cropped Trousers

Cropped trousers are also cool and easy to wear for a great summer casual look. They can be worn with all sorts of t shirts and tops and a pair of tennis shoes for a on trend outfit. If you are petite or short be careful that your cropped trousers are not too wide or loose fitting as they can make you look shorter.

Capri Trousers

Capri trousers are a more fitted version of cropped trousers and look a bit smarter. They can even be worn with heels for a summer party or barbecue. Capri trousers have a glamorous fifties feel about them and also look great with a fitted top.

Bermuda ShortsÂ

Bermuda shorts finish just above the knee and fall into two distinct categories, casual shorts and smart or tailored shorts. The tailored shorts can even be worn with a smart tailored jacket for work wear and are very fashionable at the moment. For those with a very slim or boyish figure, you can create some volume around the hips by wearing culottes or pleated shorts. For a great every day look, a brightly coloured pair of Bermuda’s are probably the most wearable of all the shorts for summer. These purple cotton shortscan be combined with lots of different colours tops for a bright summer outfit. A flat or casual pair of shoes will usually look best with casual Bermuda shorts and medium height heels or sandals with smarter or tailored shorts.

Short shorts

Generally really short shorts are best kept for the beach or garden on the hottest of days. They are usually worn by those with long and shapely legs  or those under the age of twenty. If you do choose to go down this route a pair of wedge heels is also a great way to elongate your legs and some fake tan will stop your legs from looking too pale.

Generally speaking, shorts look best with shorter and more fitted style tops. A very long or baggy top will swamp you and cover the shorts making it look like you are not wearing them. When the weather gets hot don’t be scared about getting your legs out. Shorts and cropped trousers can look great on everyone as long as they pick the right style and wear them in the right way.
