Much to my delight, the weather is gorgeous today and looks to be staying that way, for a while anyway. There is something about that spring sunshine that makes me feel happy and optimistic. It also makes me want to get out and about. After months of cold, gloomy and dark winter when I wrap myself up thick tights, cardigans and anything else that I can find to keep warm cosy, it is so refreshing to get the chance to wear something lighter and brighter.

As much as I love spring and the chance to start wearing those lovely summery clothes, it can sometimes be challenging to choose what to wear in the morning. How many times have you stepped out on a seemingly lovely spring day in a pair of open toe sandals and no tights, only to find yourself freezing by midday. That beautiful flowing maxi dress looks amazing, but it kind of spoils the effect when you have to stick on a black winter coat over the top because you are just so cold.

The key to choosing outfits for the spring is making them adaptable so that you are ready for whatever the weather throws at you. I would suggest saving those floaty maxi dresses for the summer when you can be more likely to get some hot weather, spring calls for a little more practicality.

To keep warm or cool in spring, it is a great idea to wear outfits that layer thin pieces of clothing. These will keep you warm earlier in the morning and later in the evening when the weather tends to be cooler and can be removed in the middle of the day when the sun is out.

A key consideration in the spring is whether or not to wear tights with everyday skirts. It is often not warm enough to wear no tights, unless you are very hardy but thick black tights look out of place with lighter spring outfits. The answer is to wear sheer flesh coloured tights or for a really up to date look try some sheer coloured tights in pastel colours or perhaps  a light grey.

Another question, at what point do you bring out the open toe shoes? My answer to this would be when you have had time to give yourself a pedicure and paint your toenails. But seriously it depends on how easily you get cold. Some open toe shoes look fine with a pair of sheer tights, in this case you can start wearing them now. For those that don’t, you will probably want to wait for the warmer weather.

Finally, April showers are a common problem in the spring so a light weight rain coats and or an umbrellas are a sensible thing to have to hand. Make sure it is loose enough to fit an extra layer or two for those cold days and a neutral colour that goes with the majority of clothes in your wardrobe. Sunglasses may also be needed for those sunnier days, which I am hoping we will be getting much more of.
