Team this long sleeve front frill green blouse with collar with a pencil skirt for your own take on Mad Men’s secretary style.

You might no realise it but TV and film have a huge influence on our lives right down to the clothes that we wear. Each season, not only are there countless collections inspired by TV programmes or films but many period films and programmes also have a more general affect on the overall trends and ladies fashion for he season. Many of us spend a fair few hours watching televisions but even those who don’t watch it all can’t fail to be affected by these trends in some ways. The stars of these shows have also been made into overnight style icons, this is of course no accident, some major costume co ordination is going on behind the scenes.  Here are some of the biggest influences on ladies fashion at the moment.

Sex and the City

With the cult following of the TV show and recent release of the second film, sex and the city is one of the first programmes that springs to mind when thinking about ladies fashion and TV. Many don’t even care about the storyline, they just watch for the amazing clothes. The film and TV episodes revolve around four ladies, each with their own unique style and to die for wardrobe of designer clothes. The programme has even been credited with making Manolo Blahnik a  household name in the US. The costume designer and stylist for the programme is Patricia Field, known for her clever mixing of vintage and designer clothing.

Mad Men

This is also a huge influence on current trends including the secretary chic look shown at both Prada and Louis Vuitton autumn collections. The full flared skirts that are likely to be every where this autumn are probably a result of this programme. Again each of the characters has their own distinct style. Stylist and costume designer Janie Bryant has given Betty Draper a style a little like Grace Kelly with cashmere jumpers, pearls and vintage scarves. The programme is filled with vintage clothes and lots of historical references.

Ugly Betty

This American TV show is all about Geek chic which is also a huge trend at the moment. The main character Betty Suarez is a style icon because of her clashing style. This is a look that has been favored by both Marc Jacobs and Prada. The stylist for the show are Eduardo Castro/ Patricia Field. In the last series the trendily ugly character has a style make over. It remains to be seen if her new look will prove so popular.

Glee

Glee is fairly new TV show which is attracting a huge following. Whilst on first viewing you might be a little confused as to what influence this show could possibly have on fashion. But there is definitely a more of a geek chic vibe going on. In contrast to other TV programmes, the costume designer, Lou Eyrich uses mainly affordable high street clothes.

Which TV programmes do you love for their fashion and style?

It seems that the whole world is talking about the new Sex and the City Film which premiered at the the New York City Music Hall this week. Patricia Field is the stylist for the film and her mix of extravagant and stylish fashion is part of what has made the series and films so popular. Of course the storyline is important too and everyone will be wanting to know what happens to Carrie and Big but for many it is the and clothes by designers like Marc Jacobs that is the draw. What we love about SATC is that the girls never wear  a plain old pair of jeans and t shirt.

The Sex and the City series has a very important influence on fashion over the years. It is the styling of Patricia Field that has brought hair flowers, Manolo Blahnik shoes and expensive designer handbags to the masses. But the Sex and the City Style is not all about spending lots of money. There are plenty of ways that you can take inspiration from the new film and create a great look without spending too much money.

Each of the characters in Sex and the City 2 has their own unique style that suits their personality and role in the film do well.

Carrie the main character played by Sarah Jessica Parker is well known for her simple but very stylish look and dramatic accessories. Her long honey coloured hair is definitely part of her signature style. She loves shoes and handbags and is incredibly fashionable. The SATC 2 film also sees Carrie wearing a number of dresses by Halston Heritage, not surprising really as she is the Creative Director for the label.

Samantha played by Kim Katrall has a sexy but very strong style with a heavy nineties influence. Power suits and body con dresses are important part of her wardrobe. She loves bold bright colours which match her personality perfectly.

Charlotte is played by Kristin Davis and has a sweet preppy style. She loves clothes with frill and bows and colours like bright candy pink. Her outfits are always accompanied by the perfect combination of shoes and handbags.

Miranda is a high powered career girl and has plenty if suits to match this role. Her look is often androgynous with bright autumnal colours to match her bright red hair.

Here are some of our favourite pieces from SATC.

Maxi Dresses Galore

All of the SATC girls love maxi dresses. They are the perfect thing to wear for sipping champagne on a sunny balcony.

Carrie’s checked shirt

Only Carrie could make casual look so glam. A simple fitted checked shirt teamed with cropped trousers or jeans and of course some killer heels is a really easy way to create her look.

Charlotte’s pink frills

This magenta lace detail top is the perfect piece for SATC’s Charlotte. In the film she wore a beautiful pink frilled suit by Dior this top recreates this look.

Miranda’s beautifully coloured clothes

We think this emerald green georgette silk trim dress would go so well with Miranda’s vibrant red hair. Other colours like orange, yellow and red would also look amazing.

Samantha’s pencil skirt suit

You can get Samantha’s strong bold look with a bright primary colour suit with a pencil skirt. Team with a camisole top and heels.
