The humble scarf is a misleading fashion accessory – as versatile and adaptable as anything else in a woman’s wardrobe.
Constantly wearing a scarf may be a fashion faux pas, but if you know how to wear a scarf, and when, it can be an amazing accessory.
Scarves are a staple for ladies’ fashion – and they are always trendy.
The default scarf look is, obviously, tied around your neck. In summer, going for something tight isn’t going to look great, and is going to make you too hot.
If you don’t want fabric hanging down over your outfit, scoop the loose ends up and tie them into loops, making it easier to tuck into a high-necked coat or collar.
You can adopt your scarf as headwear if it starts to rain – go for something loosely tied over your head though, or you could look uptight.
Wearing a scarf over your shoulders is another option – a look made better by a particularly colourful or patterned scarf. You don’t want too big a piece of material, or it could look like a cape – perhaps folding the scarf before flinging it over your shoulders will prevent it looking too grand.

Do you sometimes feel that your outfit is lacking something? Do you wish that your outfits had a little more colour? Do you need to refresh your wardrobe on a budget? If the answer to any of these questions is yes then you could probably benefit from investing in a scarf or two this winter. I don’t mean the woolly knitted scarf that you wear outdoors with a coat, although they are great accessories too which certainly add something to your outdoor wear. I mean a thinner scarf that can be worn indoors to enhance your outfit by changing the neckline and adding some additional colour and pattern.
With all of the neutral colours that are about this winter, a brightly coloured scarf is just a great way to brighten up an outfit. You can tie it or drape it around your neck or even tie it in your hair, around your head or on your handbag. For small square scarves the best option is often to fold them into a triangle or roll into a long thin shape, wrap around your neck and tie at the side.
For longer style scarves or pashminas, the can be elegantly draped around the neck. These sorts of scarves are also great for adding a little bit of warmth to an indoor outfit in the really cold weather but they can also be worn over a coat. For the large square scarves with pictures or large scale patterns on them, they usually look best being wrapped over your shoulders or tied in a large triangle where you can see most of the picture. The most on trend way to wear them is with the point of the triangle at the front and the ends wound right round so they hang at the front.
When choosing a scarf, think carefully about how you will wear it and the look that you would like to achieve. A silk scarf has a way of draping that no other scarf does but it will probably need to be tied rather than just draped or you will loose it. For a more boho look you can choose a fringed scarf and wind it loosely around your neck letting the loose ends hang at the front.
Scarves can look great with casual, work or even evening outfits. Look for long beaded evening scarves to add a feature and a focal point to a plain black dress. You could even wear beaded scarves in the daytime to add a bit of sparkle to your every day life.
This soft luxury black and mustard pashmina scarf is the perfect addition to any black or neutral coloured outfit. It would also look great with the seasons must have camel coat.Â
This beige open weave light weight neck scarf is a great way to add some texture and interest to an outfit but to warm to wear indoors. It would look great with an outfit made of of different shades of neutral colours layered.
Accessories are great, they can be the finishing touch to an outfit or make a statement in their own right. They can add colour or texture to an outfit or even change its shape or focus completely. But like anything in life, you can get too much of a good thing and too many accessories can make an outfit look cluttered, too busy or just plain wrong. Looking stylish is all about balance, your outfit should look balanced from your hat right down to the shoes you wear in terms of colour, texture, pattern, shape and volume. So how do you know how many accessories are too many? and how can you achieve the perfectly accessorised outfit?
Well, to a certain extent, this is one of those ‘how long is a piece of string?’ type of questions. What looks good is subjective and will be different for different people. For example one person may prefer an eclectic look with layers of beaded necklaces whilst and lots of bright colours whilst another will prefer a minimalist outfit in neutral colours. Personal style and which look that you are trying to achieve will be important when deciding which accessories to wear.
There is a saying that many people stick too that advises you to remove one accessory just before leaving the house and for those of us who tend to overdo things this could well be a good idea. Another good idea is just to look at yourself very carefully in the mirror. Stand well back so that you can see the whole of your outfit at once. De focus your eyes slightly and imagine that you are looking at someone else. Do the shapes, colour and pattern of the outfit all look right.
There are some accessories which serve an important function and just cannot be discarded completely like perhaps shoes, a handbag and a belt. It is then a case of deciding how noticable these accessories should be. As a general rule you should not wear more than one statement accessory at once. A statement accessory, is an accessory that makes a statement in some way be it by being sparkly, brightly coloured or unusually large. For example a bright red pair of shoes, large collar necklace and bead embellished clutch bag will probably look too much together. If you accessories are more subtle then you probably can get away with wearing more of them and perhaps even layering them on.
As usual when accessorising you need to pay attention to the big picture as well as the detail. Much will depend on where you are going. A work outfit will tend to work best with just one or two very subtle accessories a weekend outfit may be much more accessorised. The type of clothes that you choose to wear will also define how many accessories will look right. Generally fairly plain and simple clothes can look good with more accessories than clothes that are busy or already making a style statement in their own right.
Ever since Sienna Miller first started wearing her signature boho look (the look which turned her into a style icon), it is something that we have not been able to get away from. Particularly in the summer, boho seems to find its way into so many other trends. There are now plenty of other celebrities that do this look really well including Kate Moss, the Olsen Twins and Alexa Cheung. Boho is becoming quite a classic look now and can work for all different ages. It is not just confined to the young and trendy. The essence of the boho look is relaxed, slightly mismatched, with interesting details. It can be described in many different ways but takes inspiration from bohemian, Russian, Gypsy, Folk, hippy, seventies styles, rock and grunge. Boho is also an interesting look with lots of detail including colourful and rich prints, fringing, embroidery and intricate jewellery. In order to work the boho look what ever your age just pay attention to the usual rules on what works well for you, then work in a bit of detail. There are a number of different takes on boho.
Hippy/ Festival Boho- This type of boho is characterised by fringing, scarves, rainbow bright colours and prints, tie dye, ethnic embroidery, hair flowers, maxi skirts or denim shorts and gladiator sandals. You can easily achieve this look with the seasons tie dye skirts or by adding some great boho accessories to a simple pair of shorts and top. Maxi skirts are also a great way to wear this look, try adding a few layered tops and some bangles.
Folk Boho- the folk boho look is characterised by paisley prints, chiffon tops, faux fur gilets, tunics and black mixed with deep rich colours like reds and greens. This look works well on anyone whose colouring suits these colours. The chiffon tunics are very flattering. Mid calf length skirts are also a really flattering way to buy into this trend. Try layering gillets over the top if you want to really go for it. Ankle boots are also great for this version of boho.
Rock Boho- leather biker jackets, denim and work boots are all part of this look. Unless you are particularly confident and under thirty this look may be best left to the celebrities. You can however get a flavour of this look with a softer and more subtle looking biker style jacket in a jersey material.
Glam Boho- this look is perfect for summer parties, it is feminine and glamorous but in quite a relaxed way. Maxi dresses and chiffon dresses make great evening dresses and toe thong or gladiator sandals are all a key part of the glam boho look. For this spring and summer, there are lots of different maxi dresses to choose from so pick one to suit your body shape, they are great for hiding tummies, hips, thighs and leg
Everyday Boho- the simplest way to wear the boho look for every day is with a tunic top. Team with a shorter jacket and some hoop earrings if you really want to work boho to the maximum. For the ultimate Sienna Miller boho look, skinny jeans and a pair of ankle boots are an easy to wear outfit but for a more grown up version boots cut jeans or trousers and sandals also look great.
Essential boho accessories – an easy and subtle way to add a bit of boho to any outfit is with some accessories. Hooped earrings, pendant necklaces, gladiator sandals, fringed bags and scarves are all great additions which say boho without going overboard. Remember the key to the boho look is its the relaxed, haven’t tried too hard appeal. Even though Boho is about detail and mixing, layering and accessorising, do so carefully and remember even with the boho look sometimes less is more.
Sometimes we can all get stuck in a bit of a style rut where we tend to gravitate towards wearing the clothes that we feel comfortable in. Sometimes this can be an old favourite even though it is starting to look a little worn other times we tend to stick to the same styles and colours of clothing buying almost identical pieces over and over again. What we choose to wear each day plays an important part in our lives in terms of how we feel, our confidence and energy levels.
Wearing the same neutral coloured clothes can become a style rut (although neutrals are really in trend this year)Â and sometimes a little bit of a change can do us the world of good. Wearing bright clothes will make you feel happy, confident and energised but all too often people ar afraid of wearing bright colours. Spring and summer is a great time to wear bright clothes. The sun is out, everyone is happier and less likely to resort to those comfort zone clothes.
If you would like to dress in more colourful outfits, there is no need to wear head to toe bright colours. There are plenty of ways that you can introduce a pop of colour to an outfit without going overboard. Think about which colours you really like and which will go with existing outfits in your wardrobe and give them a try. There will be a range of colours that really suit your complexion and colouring and occasionally adding some of these to your outfit will really make you glow. You can even try combining colours that you don’t expect to go together, you might surprise yourself and find some great combinations, think about clashing colours like red and orange. How you combine colours is almost as important as what colours you choose to wear in the first place. For example red against a black outfit will look very different to red against a white background.
Here are some great ways that you can add a pop of colour to your outfits for spring:
AÂ coloured scarf - a scarf is such an easy way to add colour to a neutral outfit. You can go for a plain one coloured scarf or more complex patterned scarf. Scarves work well for both smart and casual outfits. Try combining with t-shirts and jeans or trouser suits.
A coloured clutch bag - a brightly coloured clutch bag is a really good way to add a bit of interest to a plain black or navy dress. You could also try pastel colours with a beige or neutral dress.
A patterned blouse - floral, geometric, spots or stripes are all great patters for adding a bit of colour to a plain coloured suit.
Shoes – a coloured pair of shoes with a plain outfit is a great way to add some colour with out taking away the simplicity of the outfit. Try some coloured patent ballet pumps for a chic and stylish look.
