Weddings are a great excuse to splash out on a new outfit – something eye-catching and beautiful – but it’s important not to dress so well that you’ll outshine the bride!
When picking out occasion dresses for events like weddings, there are some simple “dos” and “don’ts” that will ensure you make a statement without overdoing it.
Of course, summer weddings will probably involve a lot of out-door time, so it’s important to choose something you can look brilliant in, whilst keeping cool.
It’s also worth not going for anything too formal – depending on the invite – and perhaps choosing something you can layer so you can take off, or put on, a top if the temperature changes.
Floral colours are massively trendy this year, and it’s important to avoid wearing all white, or black, for a wedding. Going for something with floral print, or in flowery colours, is always a safe bet.
Don’t pluck out a long gown unless the wedding is likely to run into the evening, and make sure you pick out a hat that will allow you to see the bride, whilst stopping the sun getting in your eyes.
Obviously, white is a no-no: it’s a colour reserved exclusively for the bride on her big day. Heavy make-up, fancy tights or hosiery and exposing too much flesh should be avoided too.

Shoes are a must have fashion accessory and many women have more than just a few pairs of them. So what shoes should you wear for a special occasion?
 Type of Occasion
First of all, think of the type of event that you are going to. Is it a wedding, birthday party or evening out? What you wear to a wedding will be considerably different to what youâ??ll end up wearing to your friendâ??s garden party. Keep your look feminine but not overdressed for the type of occasion.
Wedding
If youâ??re going to a wedding then think about whether itâ??s going to be inside or outside. If itâ??s inside, then opt for nice heels, not too high that you canâ??t walk in them but high enough to accentuate your legs. If the wedding is outside, then itâ??s best not to wear heels or choose a pair of wedge heels that will go with occasion dresses. Chances are youâ??ll be stood on grass at some point so youâ??ll only end up sinking in to the mud. Opt for a chunkier style heel, or even go for flat, satin ballerina style pumps.
The Birthday Party
If youâ??re off to a birthday party, then check your invite for the dress code, this should give you some idea. Generally, to a birthday party you can wear heels, thereâ??s no need for stilettos but women generally look their best when wearing heels.
A Dinner Date
A dinner date with your partner can leave you wondering what shoes to wear. If youâ??re going to be sat down all evening, donâ??t think that your shoes wonâ??t matter because they do. Maybe opt for less sparkly shoes and go for a pair of plain black heels to go with your dress.
Off to a Ball
If youâ??re off to a very special occasion such as a ball, then you know that what you wear on your feet is equally important as what dress you will wear. As you will be on your feet most of the night, donâ??t go for really high heels that will leave your feet aching afterwards. How about going for flatter heels, but get a lovely glitzy pair that will really be shown off when you enter the limelight.
The Garden Party
Chances are that you will be on grass and heels + grass do not mix very well. Wear a pair of ballerina style pumps, nowadays they come in a variety of different styles and colours and can go with absolutely any outfit you want to wear.
Party in the Summer
If youâ??re having a party in the summer months, then wear a pair of glitzy heeled sandals. They will look ultra feminine whilst making you feel really summery.
 Party in the Winter
A winter party is a difficult one as you want to look great, but want to keep your feet warm at the same time. Wear a pair of sheer or black thick tights with your dress and then wear a nice pair of heeled shoes. Go for shiny ones as this will make you feel more glamorous.
It is a special time for a mother to see your daughter walk down the aisle, and you want to look your best on the day, and wear an outfit which is extra special for the occasion.
Floral dresses in particular are very stylish this season, and are a great choice to wear on this special day. A light floral dress is ideal for the summer months, with a length which sits just under the knee. During the colder weather, you can team your floral dress with a shrug or bolero, for extra warmth and comfort, without being detrimental to your style. Floral skirts will also look great teamed up with a plain coloured top.
Metallic and deep purple colours are also very trendy at the moment, and a floor length dress in these colours will guarantee to grab attention and ensure you are the belle of the ball. You could also try a fashionable mid length skirt like the floral purple print two tier dress with 3/4 sleeve suit are also ideal for this type of occasion, and if you take account of your body shape, you can choose a style which will compliment your figure. A line style skirts and empire dresses will suit almost any body shape, and keep you looking slim.
Halter-neck style dresses will show off your shoulders and for plus size ladies, there are plenty of dresses which will suit your body shape and ensure you feel confident and stunning on the day.
If you prefer to wear trousers on the day, a gorgeous trouser suit will look fantastic, topped off with a nice pair of heels. There is a range of trousers for all types of bodies, low waist for slimmer ladies, and boot leg for the more curvaceous.
After you have selected your perfect dress or suit, it’s time to consider the type of hat you want to wear, to go with your outfit. As the mother of the bride, a hat will make you look extra glamorous and stylish for the occasion. Hats with feathers and bows are particularly stylish at the moment, and will make sure you stand out from the crowd. If you prefer a more subtle look, then fascinators are a good compromise, as they still look elegant and fit for the occasion. There is a range of styles to choose from, including lace, feather and pearl bands, sequin feathers and sequin bows.
When it comes to shoes to wear on the day, a small heel is preferable, as it it will be a long day, and you will want to be as comfortable as possible. Open toe heels are highly fashionable this season, and are a style which will look great if you properly co-ordinate with the rest of your outfit. Bows and straps are other fabulous styles which are right on trend.
A simple, small handbag or clutch bag will top of your outfit nicely, and won’t take attention away from your dress or suit. It’s a good idea not to overdo your jewellery, as your outfit and hat will create enough attention to ensure you are the mother to be proud of on the big day.

Skirts make a great alternative to trousers for the summer as they are cool, comfortable and easy to wear. They are also great for the winter but there are slightly more practicalities to consider such as which tights or stockings to wear and whether they are suitable for the weather conditions. In the summer, everyday skirts are perfect for casual or work wear. They are versatile and you can use one skirt to create so many different outfits just by changing your top or jacket. Skirts are also really feminine and make you feel like you have made a little bit of an effort.
You can make the most of summer skirts by picking the best style for your body shape.
The A line skirt
The a line skirt is the pear shaped girls best friend. The gently flaring shape skims over the hip and thighs without adding any bulk or drawing attention to this area. The wider hem also helps to balance out the width of the hips. As a line skirt that finished at the knee or just above is probably the most flattering. You should wear with a top that finished at the waist as this will highlight the narrowest part of your torso. You can also look for a line skirts with interesting patterns or border prints along the hem, this will also help to balance the hips.
Pencil or straight skirt
Straight or pencil skirts are really feminine and great for showing off hour glass curves. They are often worn as part of a suit or with a blouse for work wear but can also be worn for a going out outfit. The style of a straight skirt will usually look best when worn with high heel shoes and a fitted top that skims rather than clings for a stylish and sophisticated look. Straight skirts can be difficult to walk in so it is sensible to geta good fit to ensure that you are comfortable and able to move freely.
Full skirt
A full skirt tends to be more suitable for occasion or evening wear. It is similar to the a line skirt as the skirt flares out from the waist but a full skirt will usually be bigger and fuller. There are varying degrees of fullness from fairly gently flaring skirts to a full circle skirt. The volume of the skirt will also vary with a circle skirt having very little bulk around the waist and hips but other styles or skirt having gathers which create various amounts of bulk. Generally full skirts will look best on quite tall ladies as they can be a little over powering on shorter ladies although someone short may get away with a skirt with medium fullness. Slimmer ladies will look best in skirts with lots of gathers and volume around the waist. The type of fabric will also effect how full a skirt looks, fabrics like chiffon will tend to drape and lie flatter than cotton or linen. Longer flared skirts are an easy style to wear as they do not have too much volume and create a streamlined silhouette.
Flared Hem Skirt
The flared hem skirt is similar to the straight skirt but it flare out around the hem. It is a great option for pear shaped ladies and slightly easier to walk in than the traditional straight skirt. The flared hem skirt works really well with suits or blouses for work wear but also for parties or occasion if made from a fabric like chiffon.
Skirt Length
What ever style of skirt that you choose to wear, you should carefully consider the length of your skirt. It will tend to be most flattering if it does not finish at a wider part of your leg like the mid thigh or mid calf (unless you have very slim legs). A skirt that finishes at or just above the knee is probably the most flattering for most people.
