Going to a wedding is such a great opportunity to get dressed up but not everyone relished making the all important decision on what to wear to a wedding. Will I look dressed up enough? Will I look over dressed? Will I feel uncomfortable? Will I be too hot or too cold? are all concerns that people will have when choosing what to wear to a wedding. Each wedding is different bit often a wedding will last right through the afternoon and late into the evening so it is important to choose something to wear that will be really comfortable. For weddings that have an evening party, there is also the decision on whether to get changed and wear something different for the evening.

When choosing what to wear there are really only two rules. Firstly don’t wear white (unless of course you are the bride) and secondly wear what feels right for you. Different weddings may have different dress codes and for weddings with religious ceremonies there may be certain rules or etiquette on what should and should not be worn. If in doubt check with the bride or groom before hand. Usually people will tend to wear something  a bit smarter than their everyday wear for a wedding but you should never choose something that feels wrong for you as you will regret it all day.

Suits and dresses are the most popular choices for ladies wedding outfits but you could also wear  trouser suits, smart womens trousers with a lovely top or even a pair of smart or tailored shorts with a smart top. The choice is yours and it is up to you to decide which suits your personality and style. Generally speaking ladies wedding suits are a bit different from the basic black, grey or navy suits that you would see in the work place but you could try wearing a neutral coloured suit dressed up with some bright accessories like a scarf or hat.

Dresses are also a great choice as they are so feminine and usually comfortable to wear. Look for dresses in beautiful colours and prints and luxurious fabrics to look ultra stylish. As the weather can sometimes be a little cooler in September, you will probably want to put a little thought into what you will wear to cover up. Shrugs, boleros, wraps and tailored jackets all look really good with dresses.

Many ladies choose to wear hats to weddings. This is very much dependant on your personal taste and if you feel uncomfortable wearing a hat, it is usually perfectly acceptable not to wear one. A modern alternative to hats is a fascinator which usually comprises of feathers attached to hair band or hair clip. You could also do your hair in an elaborate up do with a pretty beaded or jewelled hair clip. In case of windy weather on the big day, it is worth considering investing in a hat pin to securely hold your hat in place.

Asides from your own wedding day, the next dilemma we have to face is when our children grow up and decide to get married and so the mother of the bride (or groom for that matter!) you will be the second most important person at the ceremony. You will have guests approaching you all day to congratulate you on having such a wonderful daughter or son, you may be called upon to give a speech in the absence of a father, and as a mother you tend to ensure the smooth running of the wedding so that the bride or groom aren’t distracted with any minor hiccups. And whilst you’re doing all this, you want to show everyone just how super stylish you can be!

Being a mother of the bride doesn’t mean it’s time to go shopping for a mother of the bride clothing which you would see your own mother wearing- quite the opposite! So to help you choose the perfect outfit for your daughter/son’s big day, here are a few tips to help you. First of all, don’t opt for plain colours on plain dresses- especially if the bride is wearing white, cream, or ivory. Choose something in perhaps a darker colour such as fuchsias, greens and blues, or even vibrant purples like aubergine. Try not to be too flashy- too much exposed skin or overly shiny fabric can easily upstage the bride. If you are going to a hot country for the ceremony, a small dress which has an off the shoulder look and knee length skirt won’t look flashy for the settings as long as you keep it moderate. Check out your favourite designer as buying a dress from their collections means that you could wear your outfit after the wedding, so it won’t seem such a costly expense. But in order for you to be able to wear it again, try thinking outside the box and opt for a classy evening dress or a smart trouser suit rather than having lots of flashy sequins which isn’t really stylish for other events.

If you want to look more stylish than traditional, then avoid bridal shops. Bridal shops tend to only stock traditional mother of the bride outfits and haven’t yet caught up with the times of having younger mother of the brides, so they tend to carry ugly, sequined disasters in horrible muted pastel colours. If you are looking for special detailing on your outfit, lace is an excellent option as it is right on trend this season and seems to be continuing to be popular. A big trend hot from the catwalks is feathers, with designers such as John Galliano and Gucci proving big fans. Feather embellishment has already been seen on many A-List celebrities and would look fantastic if worn properly by women of mother of the bride age, but too many feathers at this age could make you look like a bird.

Another suggestion if you are looking for something different is to perhaps try using a college or university student who’s studying fashion designing- you will benefit from their fresh fashion knowledge and you could be the first person to wear something from this future famous designer! At the end of the day, no matter what outfit you choose, you should always compliment it with the most elegant of accessories. It is usually traditional for the mother to wear a fancy hat, but these days it’s all about head pieces or fascinators. An elegant pair of strappy, small-heeled sandals will always look the best with whatever outfit you choose, and don’t over-do it on the jewellery!

There are plenty of other ways that you can have the perfect white wedding on a budget. Just remember making your wedding day special is not about how much money you spend but more about how much though and effort you put into it. A day that is personal to you and your groom will be the most special and memorable day that you can have. It is the little touches like having a good friend sing at the cermony, some great speeches and a fun quiz after the meal for the guests.

Here are some other ways that you can have the perfect white wedding on a budget:

  • Having your wedding later on in the evening will eliminate the need to provide two meals for guests. Why not arrange a meal at a local pub or restaurant for a much more cost effective option than a hotel.
  • Ask any friends with useful skills for their help. If you know someone who takes great photographs to take some photographs of the ceremony and reception or ask all of your friends to send copies of their wedding photos and pick out the best for the wedding album. You may find that the natural style of these photos is just as good as the posed photographs of a photographer.
  • Choose simple flowers. a single stem like a Cala Lily will look great with your wedding dress as an alternative to a bouquet and you can easily make simple flower arrangements for the church and reception.
  • Many supermarkets will sell a wedding cake which you can then decorate with sugar flowers or fresh flowers to make it look really individual.
  • Why not arrange a honeymoon in the UK? there are some amazing places to see and a honeymoon is the perfect time to spend some time going to places that you might not usually visit.

Your daughters wedding, is an incredibly important and happy event. This will signal a new episode in your daughters life and maybe yours as well. It will also be a celebration of not only your daughters new life with her new husband, but also a new relationship and connection between two families. Your daughters wedding day will be memorable day for everyone involved, not quite as important to you as your own wedding day, but almost.

As Mother of the Bride, you will probably spend quite a bit of time thinking about your outfit. You will want to look your best on the day and of course in the photographs. Here are some important considerations when choosing your Mother of the Bride outfit.

The Bride and Bridesmaids- The big day is not really about being the centre of attention, this is of course the brides privilege, but in your supporting role, you will also want to look stunning. You should check how elaborate the brides outfit will be. If  the bride has opted for a simple look, try not to choose an outfit that is too elaborate. You will want to stand out from the other guests, after all, you are a very important part of the wedding party.Wear what every colour you like and know that looks good on you. Of course white is a big no no and it would be a good idea to perhaps consider what the bridesmaids are wearing. Don’t wear the same colour as the bridesmaids but  a colour that compliments would look great.

The Mother of the Groom – it would be a nice idea to consult with the mother of the groom on what you are wearing. You obviously won’t want to both turn up in exactly the same colour or very similar styles.

Dress or Suit - either a dress or suit will be appropriate for even the most formal or weddings. Depending on the weather, you may want to choose a tailored jacket to wear with a dress to keep you warm especially if the wedding reception goes on until the evening. Boleros and shrugs are also an elegant way to cover your arms.

The Hat- It is traditional (although not compulsory) for the Mother of the Bride to wear a hat. This is where you can really stand out from the crowd. Choose something elegant that compliments your outfit but it doesn’t have to be the same colour as your outfit. Try on a variety of different styles to see which looks best with your outfit and suits your face shape.

Shoes - It is likely to be a long day and you may well be on your feet for much of it, meeting and greeting friends and family, helping with arrangements and generally socialising. A comfy and stylish pair of shoes is essential. If you are buying new shoes, try them out in advance to make sure that they are comfortable, if they are not, it might ruin the day for you.

What ever you decide to wear, make sure it is something that makes you feel good. It is important that your wear what you feel comfortable in and enjoy yourself.
