Ever since Sienna Miller first started wearing her signature boho look (the look which turned her into a style icon), it is something that we have not been able to get away from. Particularly in the summer, boho seems to find its way into so many other trends. There are now plenty of other celebrities that do this look really well including Kate Moss, the Olsen Twins and Alexa Cheung. Boho is becoming quite a classic look now and can work for all different ages. It is not just confined to the young and trendy. The essence of the boho look is relaxed, slightly mismatched, with interesting details. It can be described in many different ways but takes inspiration from bohemian, Russian, Gypsy, Folk, hippy, seventies styles, rock and grunge. Boho is also an interesting look with lots of detail including colourful and rich prints, fringing, embroidery and intricate jewellery. In order to work the boho look what ever your age just pay attention to the usual rules on what works well for you, then work in a bit of  detail. There are a number of different takes on boho.

Hippy/ Festival Boho- This type of boho is characterised by fringing, scarves, rainbow bright colours and prints, tie dye, ethnic embroidery, hair flowers, maxi skirts or denim shorts and gladiator sandals. You can easily achieve this look with the seasons tie dye skirts or by adding some great boho accessories to a simple pair of shorts and top. Maxi skirts are also a great way to wear this look, try adding a few layered tops and some bangles.

Folk Boho- the folk boho look is characterised by paisley prints, chiffon tops, faux fur gilets, tunics and black mixed with deep rich colours like reds and greens. This look works well on anyone whose colouring suits these colours. The chiffon tunics are very flattering. Mid calf length skirts are also a really flattering way to buy into this trend. Try layering gillets over the top if you want to really go for it. Ankle boots are also great for this version of boho.

Rock Boho- leather biker jackets, denim and work boots are all part of this look. Unless you are particularly confident and under thirty this look may be best left to the celebrities. You can however get a flavour of this look with a softer and more subtle looking biker style jacket in a jersey material.

Glam Boho- this look is perfect for summer parties, it is feminine and glamorous but in quite a relaxed way. Maxi dresses and chiffon dresses make great evening dresses and toe thong or gladiator sandals are all a key part of the glam boho look. For this spring and summer, there are lots of different maxi dresses to choose from so pick one to suit your body shape, they are great for hiding tummies, hips, thighs and leg

Everyday Boho- the simplest way to wear the boho look for every day is with a tunic top. Team with a shorter jacket and some hoop earrings if you really want to work boho to the maximum. For the ultimate Sienna Miller boho look, skinny jeans and a pair of ankle boots are an easy to wear outfit but for  a more grown up version boots cut jeans or trousers and sandals also look great.

Essential boho accessories – an easy and subtle way to add a bit of boho to any outfit is with some accessories. Hooped earrings, pendant necklaces, gladiator sandals, fringed bags and scarves are all great additions which say boho without going overboard. Remember the key to the boho look is its the relaxed, haven’t tried too hard appeal. Even though Boho is about detail and mixing, layering and accessorising, do so carefully and remember even with the boho look sometimes less is more.

floral maxi dressprinted maxi dress

The printed maxi dress has been around for quite a few seasons now and it is showing no sign of going away. Its popularity may be something to do with the fact that it suits everyone and is an easy style to wear. In contrast to previous seasons , this years maxi dress is not too full and has feminine floral prints as well as some of the other key prints of the season.

The great thing about the maxi dress is that you don’t need to have perfect legs to wear it. It is ideal for those days or occasions when you want to or need to cover up a bit. It is great for most body shapes and the empire line covers a multitude of sins from a bulging belly to saddlebag thighs. It fits in with so many different looks from boho to feminine and evening glamour.

The printed maxi dress is suitable for all sorts of occasions including:

  • Wear with a smart or tailored jacket for work
  • Wear with flipflops and a straw hat for the beach
  • Wear with a shrug or bolero and wedge sandals for a wedding or garden party
  • Wear with a sequin jacket, heels and a fab clutch for an evening party
  • Wear with a denim jacket and gladiator sandals for a casual summer outfit

As with all clothing, when choosing a maxi dress, you should consider which will look best and suit your body shape and colouring. For petites of those that are shorter, the maxi dress can be slightly tricky but that is not to say that they can’t look great. Petites should choose a style that is fairly fitted and steer clear of those with full or gypsy skirts. Heels or  wedges are a great way to add a bit of height and to give a taller appearance.

For taller women, the maxi dress is definitely their best friend. Fuller styles will look elegant and maxi dresses are a great way to look feminine without revealing too much. Plus sizes also look great in the maxi dress, again giving maximum feminity and maximum coverage. The maxi dress doesn’t cling around the torso, stomach or hips but is instead fitted around the bust highlighting a good clevage.

For those with great arms the maxi dress gives you the perfect opportunity to show them off. For those that don’t like their arms, they will look just as good with a cardigan, jacket or shrug.

It is also well worth thinking about the size and scale of the print on the dress. A smaller print will look good on petites and avoid them from looking swamped. A larger scale print will be more flattering on plus sizes and appear more in proportion.

Once that amazingly hot summer, that we are all waiting for arrives, the maxi dress is also the perfect way to keep cool. It is light and airy and can comfortably be worn without tights on even the hottest of summer days.
