The winter weather has make an unwelcome return, so it’s now time to start dressing appropriately for the conditions, and the best way to do this is by using some protective layering. The more layers you wear the better, as the the air will be trapped between each piece of clothing, keeping you warm and snug during the cold weather. It is a good idea to consider the temperature before you start your layering, but remember it is always better to be too warm than too cold, and you can remove pieces of your layering if you start feeling the heat.

You should also consider where you are going, as this will help determine how many layers you should wear. For example, if you are shopping indoors, you can choose to wear less layers than if you are spending the day outdoors. Similarly, if you are going hill walking or in other conditions where you are likely to face freezing cold conditions, you want to have as many layers as you can comfortably manage.

Automatically, we think of layering as making us looking dowdy and unattractive, but if you select your choices of layering carefully, you can still look stylish and trendy during the autumn and winter months. You can start your layering with your underwear, long underwear will be beneficial to keeping you well insulated, as will a pair of thick socks or tights. The next layer would be a top or t-shirt, which should be made of material which feels nice and cosy against your skin. Knitted jumpers or cardigans over the top of this will keep you fashionable but will also ensure you have an extra layer of warmth. Fleece jackets are also really good for keeping you well insulated, and you can choose warm colours which are stylish, and which will keep the heat in your body. You should keep a thin layer between each item of your clothing, as this will ensure as little as possible air will escape, keeping you warm and comfortable. It’s best to choose layers which are not too tight or too baggy.

A stylish winter coat is a great investment for the autumn/winter seasons to wear on top of your layering, and most coats will last for several years. A sheepskin aviator jacket, duffle coat, quilted or padded jacket are all very fashionable this season, and will keep you very well insulated. It is even better if you wear a jacket with some fur around the collar, or with a hood, as this will stop the cold getting to your neck.

After you have chosen your layering and winter coat, you can wear extra accessories which will further keep you warm. An orb style or woollen scarf is a great choice for the winter months, or a cable knit snood will also keep you stylish and cosy. A hat is also a must for this season; cable beret and beanie hats are choices which will be sure to keep you looking fashionable. Add a pair of gloves to your outfit to keep your hands insulated.

Taking inches off your body weight can sometimes be as simple as wearing the right style of clothes. Follow these simple rules to keep yourself looking svelte:

â?¢ Wear the correct size: Many of us will hang onto our size 12 or equivalent clothes, even though we don’t quite fit into them comfortably, refusing to admit that we need to go one size up. Some of us will even go to the lengths of lying on the bed, pulling in our bellies, whilst eagerly trying to zip our jeans up, just so that we don’t need to face the fact that we need a bigger size! If this scenario sounds familiar, then it’s time to change your wardrobe. There is nothing worse than seeing someone with clothes which are clearly too small for them, as it only highlights the extra bulges and dimples. Equally, clothes which are too big and baggy, will also make you appear heavier than you are. Wear clothes that fit you comfortably, as not only will it instantly make you look slimmer, you will also appear more at ease and confident.
â?¢ Dress for your body shape: As it is important to wear the correct size of clothes, it is also essential to dress to suit your body shape. For instance, if you have a pear shaped body, then you want to wear clothes which are bigger on your bottom half and smaller on your top half. The attention will be more focused on your smaller top half, which will instantly give you a slimmer look. On the other hand, if you are apple shaped, then you want to make sure you don’t wear clothes which are tight around your midriff, as this is usually the problem area for this type of shape. However, you would normally have a smaller waist, so bring attention to this area by wearing a belt which pulls everything in.
â?¢ Dark colours: You don’t want to have a wardrobe full of black clothes, but darker shades of your favourite colours will instantly give you a slimmer look. This sleeveless round neck black pleat shift dress (pictured above) is a classic style which will flatter and slim most body shapes. If you don’t like you arms you can always add a jacket or cardigan.
â?¢ Choose the right pattern: Some patterns can be good for creating a slimming effect, but it’s important to choose the correct one, nothing too busy. If you are going for stripes, then make sure they are vertical and not horizontal, as this will make you appear heavier.
â?¢ Supportive underwear: These days there are lots of different types of underwear, which push and pull everything in, and smooth out unsightly lumps and bumps. There’s no excuse for wearing pants with visible lines either, as there is such a range of alternative underwear to choose from.
â?¢ High heels: High heeled shoes will make you appear slimmer as they give you some extra height and will make your legs appear longer and leaner. They will also make you feel more confident, which will give you an extra boost.

When choosing what to wear each morning, how much thought do you put into your outfit? probably more than you realise. There are plenty of things to consider when choosing a stylish outfit some of which you will probably so subconsciously, some which require a little more deliberate planning.

Colour

The colour of clothing that you choose to wear will have a huge impact on how you look. Some colours will make you look really well and make your complexion glow whilst others will make you look drained. You should do a little research and work out which are you best colours so that you can glow every day.

Shape

It doesn’t really matter what size you are, the key to looking good is choosing the right clothes for your body shape. There are plenty of books and articles on the subject and once you have correctly worked out your body shape, you can fill you wardrobe with clothes which look great on you, making getting dressed in the morning much easier. Clothes that compliment your body shape will cleverly disguise, skim over and balance out the areas that you don’t like so much and draw attention to those that you do.

Fit

Finding the right clothes to fit you is another important aspect of looking stylish. Sleeves too long, waist band too tight and shirt buttons which pull are not good looks. By getting clothes that fir correctly you will avoid unsightly creasing, gaping and pulling of clothes. Clothes that are too big will also swamp you hiding your figure and making you look bigger. Badly fitting clothes are also likely to make you feel uncomfortable. A stylish person usually oozes confidence which is difficult to do when you are uncomfortable.

Interest

Unless you are going for the minimalist look every outfit should have something that makes it interesting. Perhaps a pop of colour, a great accessory, a variety of textures or a brightly coloured pattern. How you choose interesting outfits and add interest to your outfits is what makes up your own personal style. This is where you can get creative and find ways to really show off your personality and be unique.

Practicality

All of the clothes that you wear should be comfortable and practical and should prevent you from doing what you want. Some areas to consider when choosing your outfits is the ease of movement, warmth and how easy it is to walk in your shoes. Hobbling or tripping over in high heel shoes doesn’t look stylish no matter how stylish the shoes are, neither does shivering and looking cold because you don’t have an appropriate coat or jacket for the weather.

Appropriateness

Finally you should consider the appropriateness of your outfit. This can be a tricky one to decide and for different people and different occasions can mean different things. A work environment or place of religious worship may have their own dress codes as will formal or black tie events. On a daily basis, you may also consider whether your choice of clothes is age appropriate , but again this will be different for different people. The black long sleeved tailored contrast jacket (pictured above) will be appropriate for most smart occasions.
