When it comes to over 50s women’s clothing, a new survey has found shopping for jeans stresses women out more than any other item of clothing.
The research, by an online retail network, found 67% of women said shopping for jeans was the “most stressful” shopping experience.
Of those, 43% said jean shopping was even more stressful than moving home – traditionally one of the most stress-inducing tasks.
Jeans are a timeless fashion staple – great for everyday wear and ideal for altering for going out.
However, as jeans have evolved, many over 50s have felt left behind – especially with skinny fit, hipsters and baggier jeans becoming trendy.
The best advice is not to panic – most people look great in jeans. There’s no need to buy small and try to squeeze into a pair of denims that don’t fit – go for something that you feel comfortable in, and let the denim do the work for you.

The 70s are currently in revival – doing away with figure-hugging skinny jeans and reintroducing the High Street to flares.
Denim is one of the most universal fabrics – worn everywhere, by everyone, at some point in their lives.
Previous denim revivals have favoured deeper colours or washed-out, ‘distressed’ looks – but plain old pale denim is back with a bang this summer.
By the end of the summer, denim’s revival should be complete – and it’s the ideal fabric to ease the transition from the warm summer to the chillier autumn.
A pair of light denim cropped jeans could replace boring old shorts and add a touch of the latest women’s fashions to your summer wardrobe.
Denim dresses are great too, light enough to keep you cool, and can be mixed with a whole rainbow of colours to personalise your look.

We all have days where we don’t feel comfortable in our clothes from a bit of extra weight, but there are clever dressing ways which allow you to dress slimmer.
Wearing one single colour from your head to your toe will make your silhouette appear slimmer as well as making you appear taller. Columns of colour are a classic way to look slimmer. Wearing different tones of the same colour for example a grey cardigan, grey jeans and ankle boots is especially effective as grey is a neutral tone.
Vertical prints are another way to make you look like you’re carrying less weight. Ditch any floral patterns and go for big vertical stripes or pinstripes. Horizontal stripes will obviously have the opposite effect to these should be avoided.
Make sure you don’t try and hide any fleshy bits under shapeless womens clothing. This will give the impression that there is more hidden that there actually is. Shop for clothes which skim the body, and you can look fabulous, even on an off day.

Ok so let’s face it, there is possibly a stereotype of what the more mature lady should wear and jeans perhaps wouldn’t necessarily be the first thing that comes into our heads.
But why should we stop wearing certain things just to conform the ideologies of others?
The answer to this question should be for the wearer to decide – not what we are told is right and wrong.
As you may recall, the over 50s generation were, in fact, very fervent adopters of jeans in their youth, so why should we have to stop after a certain age.
Looking back on photographs of you when you were younger, you will probably find that in every one you had a pair of jeans on, to be more accurate you probably had a pair for every occasion!
If you still love wearing jeans, here are a few tips to help you remain stylish and trendy whilst keeping in-line with your maturity.
- Try and avoid light denim at all costs, even the younger generation have trouble pulling off this look. Stick to darker denims such as navy and black-it looks more stylish and darker denims compliment those with larger figures.
- Stretch denim is a great way to feel comfortable and a great way to look good. Nobody will know if you are wearing stretch denim-it could do wonders for those problem areas that other non-stretch jeans can’t.
- Go jeans shopping and try a few different styles and shades on. You could have been wearing the same pair of jeans for years that may have suited you at the time, but today a different style or shape could be the new look you have been looking for.
Whatever you decide there really is no right or wrong answer, looking and feeling good is the most important part of womens fashion, and only you can decide on that!

We all know ill fitting shoes can be a nightmare, but there are whole arrays of fashion mistakes that can be causing real damage to your body, says the Express today.
And it’s not just women that are affected; both men and women’s clothing can be causing damage.
Underlying pains and aches can all be down to wearing the wrong clothing, starting with underwear.
A poorly fitting bra can be the cause of both shoulder and neck pain in women.
Women with a larger bust should be wearing a more supportive bra, as thinner straps will be unsupportive, dig in to your shoulders and cause great discomfort and pain.
According to the Express, over 75 per cent of women are wearing the wrong sized bra, which can be the cause of long-suffering backache.
It is also said that long term use of a tight fitting Basque or corset can be very restrictive and lead to breathing problems and heartburn.
Sammy Margo of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy says: â??It alters the way you breathe; you end up breathing from the upper airways rather than the diaphragm. It impedes digestion and weakens the muscles because the corset is doing the work for them.â?
Even in men, tight fitting underwear can cause problems. According to the Express, Boxer shorts and Y-fronts that are too tight can cause infertility in men. For couples having trouble conceiving, males are often advised to change to loose fitting underwear.
Even the most unlikely of clothing like pop socks, can cause pins and needles, if they have a very tight fitting band at the top.
Leggings can also cause problems in the winter, according to Sammy Margo, they provide so much support that your legs won’t be as toned by the time you stop wearing them.
Jeans can be a no-go for a lot of women, maybe because it is hard for you to find the right fit, or simply because they are uncomfortable. Tight fitting jeans which cause a ‘muffin top’ effect can cause a condition called meralgia paraesthetica.
According to the Express this is a nerve problem, which is often referred to as ‘tingling thigh syndrome.’
The syndrome is caused by pressure on the femoral cutaneous nerve which runs through the thigh. This can then lead to temporary pins and needles which can run down the legs.
Tight trousers can also be a problem causer in men, having similar effects to tight fitting underwear. Tight fitting trousers can over heat the testes, restricting sperm motility and can lower a man’s sperm count.
Even accessories can cause problems; oversized, heavy bags can cause shoulder and back pain. It is advised that you travel as lightly as possible, distributing the weight evenly.
Most women are aware that high heels can not only provide discomfort, cuts and blisters, they can also lead to knee problems.
Although flat shoes can provide just as much damage, sheepskin boots such as Ugg’s do not provide a lot of support, which can lead to tendon strain.
It is important that your clothes fit you correctly and underwear and shoes are supportive and comfortable.
