With barbecue season hotting up, and burgers and sausages sizzling on grills country-wide, there will be plenty of opportunities to enjoy a smoking feast in the evening sunshine.

But it’s worth thinking about what to wear to help you feel cool and relaxed as you eat in the heat.

Unless you’re planning to barbecue late into the evening, it’s best to avoid jeans as you could end up too hot.

A floral, floaty dress with a chunky cardigan or jumper could be the perfect mix of care-free summer style and practical consideration of the weather – you can always lose the cardy if you get too hot!

Try not to wear anything too grand – a barbecue isn’t likely to be as classy as a garden party – so aim for a touch of style but don’t overdress.

The latest fashions shouldn’t be your only consideration – if you’re a particular fan of barbecued ribs, chicken wings and finger food, be sure to grab some serviettes so you don’t end up with sticky fingerprints on your clothes!

You may think that layering is too young a look but actually it’s a great way to mix interesting textures and patterns, and combine colours in interesting ways.

Team similar colours together and layer in thin fabrics to avoid looking bulky.

Get this style right and it looks great – stick to tonal and textural layering and you won’t go far wrong.

Don’t go for items that chop your body in half, usually at the waist or hip.  Opt for long, unbroken line and dress in monochrome or tonal combinations from head to foot, which is slimming, no matter what the colour.

Everybody knows that Paris is the fashion capital of the world, so if you’re planning a romantic break this spring or just a short get-away, then dressing to impress should be high on the holiday check-list.

It can be cold around this time of year so choosing the right clothes, whilst remaining classic should be the first consideration.

You can never go far wrong with a practical neutral black coat, the colour of which never tires among the Parisians.

Paring that with dark grey, dark brown or other dark colours such as purple are a must.

The latest fashion trend in women’s clothing is black slacks, so pairing them up with a dark, knee-length coat will keep you up-to-date.

Also packed in the suitcase should be black leggings and skirts or dresses worn with black tights or nylon stockings will work well with the jacket.

The most important accessory should be the scarf; they can add colour and also compliment older skin, particularly if they are darker in colour.

A pair of flat shoes is essential, as you will cover a lot of walking ground. A stylish knee length boot will keep you warm but also allow you to remain stylish if worn over skinny jeans or leggings.

If you are looking for something a bit more glamorous then try a pair of high-heel ankle boots with either skinny jeans, trousers or skirts as they are quite high fashion at the moment.

The biggest tip that we can give you is to take some spending money, as there are amazing women’s clothing stores in Galleries La Fayette which cater for the most exquisite to the lower end of the budgets but promise to be equally as fashionable.

While you may want to wear all the latest trends, there are certain styles of womens clothing ladies over 50 should avoid.

The most obvious is short skirts. No matter how slim your legs are, short skirts are incredibly unflattering on older women. Keep skirt lengths to the knee and try to wear a small heel to elongate the leg.

Sleeve-less tops are another no-no, as the tops of the arms can sag and become loose with age. If you insist on wearing a sleeve-less top or dress, add a short-sleeved cardigan or shawl to hide any imperfections.

When it comes to jeans, go for figure-hugging, well-fitting styles. Bootcut styles are the most flattering and always make sure the waistband sits on the waist. Low rise or hipster jeans should be left to the young.

Also try to avoid very low cut tops paired with stacks of jewellery. Alone, these are incredibly ageing but together they look tacky. Stick to scoop neck or V-neck tops with one piece of jewellery at a time.

By following these simple rules, you can be sure to always look stylish and classy, whether you are going to a party or just visiting the shops.

Shop at stores that cater for the more stylish women offering a variety of styles and cuts as well as womens dresses and pants that will flatter the figure as it enters maturity. Some of the more top end designers like Liz Claiborne and Giorgio Armarni cater particularly well for the over 40′s.

Why not try and bring back to life some pieces in your wardrobe that you haven’t seen for a while and pair them up with something new. This will save money as well as created a whole new look and dimension to your style.

Get experimental; try new styles and lines that you perhaps wouldn’t have considered before, after all you have nothing to lose and it could give you a whole new lease of life for not only you but for your wardrobe.
