Are you heading off to a party? Looking at your invitation, wondering what on earth the dress code is. So it says Black Tie, Casual, Dressy Casual â?? what actually do they mean? Take a look at the dress code definitions to help you along your way.

Black Tie
This is the most formal style you go for. Ladies you should look at getting a nice cocktail dress, a longer dress or even a ball gown style dress. Depending on what dress you choose, think about the type of jewellery to wear with that dress. If your dress is halter neck then go for some nice dangly earrings and stay away from a necklace. However if you go for a normal strappy dress, try wearing a dainty necklace and some studded earrings, try to keep chunky jewellery away from such a beautiful dress.

Formal
Whilst formal is fairly self explanatory many people can relate formal to black tie; there are only some slight differences with what the men can and canâ??t wear. Women should still opt for cocktail dresses, evening dresses and longer, ball gown style dresses.

Creative Black Tie
This is still known as formal wear, but will leave different variations for different people what with their many different styles and trends they feel comfortable in. Women should still wear a dress, but can go for a shorter or longer styled one for this dress code.

Semi-Formal Attire
Whilst you still have to stay looking smart, it is not necessary that you wear a long dress to this event. Try wearing a shorter style dress, or even a dressy style suit.

Cocktail Attire
Simply, a cocktail dress. Women should look at getting a shorter, elegant style cocktail dress for this party and look at wearing heels to elongate your figure.

Informal
Now this dress code can cause a lot of confusion with many people. Informal is mainly the same as Semi-Formal attire, but does get confused with Casual Dress. Women should still wear shorter style dresses and accessorise their outfit with some sparkly jewellery.

As you move between seasons you will often find that your wardrobe needs a little reorganisation, it is also a good time to have a clear out. A well organised wardrobe will not only make getting dressed in the morning much quicker and easier but it will also allow you to easily put together stylish and co ordinated outfits. Organising you wardrobe is a good way to familiarise yourself with what clothes you actually have (it can be easy to forget) and where the gaps in your wardrobe are. When you shop for new clothes following a wardrobe re organisation you can be more focused on what you actually need rather than just buying more of what you already have.

Create space in an over crowded wardrobe

An over crowded wardrobe can make it difficult to find clothes and also can crease, flatten or damage your clothes. Clearing  little space will allow your clothes to hang properly keeping them in better condition. The first way that you can make some space is by identifying any clothes that don’t fit you or you no longer wear. Be ruthless, if you haven’t worn them in the last year are you really going to wear them again. You could also find some sort of alternative storage for summer clothes or clothes that you want to keep.

Organise your clothes in a way that suits you

Find a way to organise your clothes that suits you and makes your life easier. You could put all trousers, skirts and tops together. Others may prefer to organise their clothes by colour or occasion e.g work, parties, casual. You could also find a way of organising accessories like scarves, jewellery and belts which makes them easy to see and find. Coats hooks on the inside of your wardrobe are a good way of doing this.

Protect and care for your clothes

To prolong the life of your clothes and ensure that they always look great you should protect and care for them. For a particularly elaborate or delicate piece of clothing you can by covers. Cedar wood balls are a good way to keep moths at bay and delicate or woollen items should be folded to avoid stretching. Good quality coat hangers are also better for your clothes.

Identify what you need

Once you have organised your wardrobe, you should be able to get a much better idea of which pieces of clothing you will need for the winter. Think about how much of your time you spend on different activities, ideally your wardrobe should have roughly the same  balance. There is no point in having a wardrobe full of evening dresses if you only go to one party a year. You should invest in some more casual clothes so that your wardrobe really works for you. When you buy new clothes try and buy pieces that work with your existing wardrobe. For winter you will also probably want warm clothes that are suitable for layering to allow maximum versatility from outfits.

It is not long now until Christmas and for many of us thoughts will be turning to Christmas shopping and Christmas parties. One of the decisions to make this Christmas will be which glamorous party outfit to wear. Most people will opt to wear a dress but some will also choose trousers and a smart top. As it is now winter you will also want to think about party cover ups. What will you wear over your beautiful dress to travel to and from the party and will you need a smaller and lighter cover up to wear during the party or dinner either because you prefer not to show the tops of your arms or you just get cold.

A cover up for travelling to and from a party will usually be a longer and warmer style as it will need to keep your from freezing when you have to go outside. A cover up that you wear inside and during a party will be very different. It will usually be quite a short style to prevent it form interfering with the line of your party dress. It can also be either plain to compliment an elaborate dress or with plenty of detail to compliment a simple style of dress.

Here are our top 5 glamorous party cover ups for the party season:

Brown Animal Print Tape Detail Short Sleeve Bolero

This detailed bolero would look great with either a plain black or brown dress or the matching dress which has vertical stripes in the same animal print tape. The tape adds an interesting pattern to the bolero and is great for brightening up a dress in a subtle way. It would look particularly good when accessorised with gold accessories.

Long Sleeved Crochet Knit Beaded Cardi

Whilst this cardigan won’t add a huge amount of warmth it will add plenty of glamour to any evening or party dress. The subtle beading adds a little sparkle to an outfit and the delicate crochet pattern adds an interesting texture.

Long Sleeved Frilled Edge Cardigan

If you are going to a party that you know is going to be a little bit cold, this long sleeved frilled edge cardigan is a great choice. It is also a great investment as it will go wit just about any piece of party wear. The delicate frilled edge adds a touch of luxury and draws the eyes upwards towards the face.

Long Sleeved Black Cardigan

If you are wearing smart trousers to a party, then this cardigan will make a great cover up. It is really cosy and warm but also has beading around the neckline to make it look really special.

Black and Red Shrug

This black and red shrug looks  amazing with an evening dress. Its slightly loose fit perfectly compliments a column or maxi shape of dress and it is a great way to add some subtle colour for the evening.

Metallic clothes are the perfect choice for the festive season ahead. They add a little bit of low key shimmer and are perfect for all sorts of occasions either day or night. They are understated but very stylish and a great way to add a little bit of Christmas to just about any outfit. Choose from bronze, silvers and gold in matt finishes.

Choose you metallic clothes carefully. If you have warm skin tones with under tones of olive, yellow and brown, you will look best in gold and bronze colours. If you have a cool skin tone with under tones of blue, purple and rose, you will look best on silver and pewter pieces. By wearing metallic clothes and accessories next to your face you can ensure that the colour radiates onto your face making your complexion glow. Generally the duller metallic are much easier to wear and much more flattering.

This season you can take your pick of metallic knit wear, satin or taffeta dresses and even shoes or accessories. Whatever you choose to wear co ordinate carefully with your jewellery for a really stunning outfit.

Beaded Bronze Taffeta Dress With Applique and Tape

This dress is a great way to wow at any Christmas party. It is a long way from the over shiny disco dresses that have been in fashion in the past and definitely proof that it is possible to do metallic in a very elegant and sophisticated way. It has an underskirt which makes the skirt stand out and a beautiful satin sash at the waist.

Bronze Crochet Over Blouse With A Tie Hem

If you are looking for a great way to add metallic to an every day outfit, then this over blouse may be just what you need. It is a great way to add some subtle colour and texture to a plain black outfit. The deep v created by this blouse is also very slimming and helps to elongate the torso.

Black and Silver Contrast Evening Blouse

This blouse is both striking and lady like. It can be combined with a black skirt or trousers for a Christmas party outfit.  You can also add some elegant black accessories for a really eye catching look. A necklace might interfere with the neckline of this top so instead try wearing some beautiful earrings.

Silver Clutch Bag

This beautiful evening bag is the perfect accessory for a little black dress or any black evening dress. It is a classic style and a great way to add a bit of contrast to a Christmas outfit. It is just big enough to fit the essentials for a night out.

Silver Satin Top

This pretty top is   a great piece to take you from daytime to evening perhaps for a work Christmas party. It looks great with a pair of black trousers or a black skirt.

Any moment now, the Christmas party invites will be starting to arrive. Whether itâ??s a work do or a Christmas Ball, you will want to choose the right dress. Itâ??s so much easier for men who can just put on a suit or a dinner jacket but not nearly as much fun. Christmas time means you can really go to town with your dress. For fabrics, think taffeta, chiffon and velvet. When it comes to the style, there are endless possibilities. Do you prefer long or short, slim line and elegant or a fuller more extravagant number? It probably depends on the type of event, although these days the choice between cocktail dress or a full length evening or ball gown is a little more blurred than it used to be. Black tie doesnâ??t have to mean long! This means you can choose the perfect dress to suit you, whatever your age and your figure, regardless of the occasion. Donâ??t forget to try your dress on with the right shoes, particularly with a long dress; this is really important as the height of the heel can make a real difference to how the dress looks on you. High heels always look lovely but if you are going to be dancing all night make sure you find a pair that are comfortable as well as looking great to go with your dress.

The little black dress is the classic party dress. Choose one with the right cut to suit you and accessorise correctly and it is a sure-fire way to look amazing! There is a wide variation of styles so this dress can suit every age and every figure. Itâ??s just a question of finding the right dress. This classic round necked dress, with a fitted bodice and a flared skirt, is the perfect little black dress. The length is flattering and easy to wear.

These days for a black tie event, a little black dress is often acceptable but many people prefer a long evening dress. Again black is always a good choice and very flattering but personally I prefer a splash of colour and it certainly helps if you want to make an impression. For Christmas time, red or green is always very seasonal and festive. I love this beautiful chiffon triple layer red dress. The silky chiffon fabric is perfect party wear. The dress has a flattering v-neck and fitted bodice with a flared skirt. The delicate beadwork detail to the thick straps adds something special. It even comes with a matching scarf. If you want to get noticed, this is the dress to wear!

If you want to go really formal, there is nothing like a classic ball gown. There is something of a fairytale feel about a ball gown that makes you feel really feminine and special. This sleeveless black ball gown is stunning. It has a boat neckline with an A-line skirt, but what really makes it stand out it the stunning white floral embroidery and beading. I just love these details, which make the dress stand out from all the other black dresses you are likely to see.
