When you go to a party or special occasion, it can often be difficult to know what to wear as a cover up. Most of the cardigans and jackets that you have will not be formal enough of will just not work with the line of your dress. An evening or party dress requires something a bit special to show it off to its full potential and compliment it with just the right amount of sparkle, detail or interest. It should not be covered up too much but needs a functional cover up that does not stop the skirt from hanging correctly.

A bolero is the name given to a short fitted jacket which usually has a curved edge on the fron to opening so that it can be elegantly left open to show the beauty of the dress. A bolero will work particularly well with an empire line evening dress as it mirrors the seam which falls just under the bust. It also looks good with column style dress as it helps to elongate the body by altering the proportions. It also works especially well for petites as it makes everything look in proportion.

For most people an evening cover up has two main functions. One is for those who don’t want to show off their arms, perhaps because they feel uncomfortable or the other to add a little bit of warmth. A boloro can transform an evening dress giving it a completely different look. Think how different a plain black strappy evening dress would look when a sequin bolero is added.

You can make your bolero a feature of the outfit by choosing one with embellishments or in a bright colour. This would usually work best with a quite plain evening dress. If you have an elaborate evening dress, it would probably be best to wear a fairly plain bolero so that it does not detract from the dress.

When we have an important evening party or formal event to attend, we usually spend quite a bit of time considering which dress to wear but all too often the weather is colder than expected and we either spend all evening freezing or end up with a jacket that covers up our beautiful evening dress. With the British weather being what it is and evenings even in the summer often being a little chilly, most of the time an evening dress needs some sort of cover up. Occasion wear for outdoor events can also have the same issue, the weather is not warm enough to wear a dress on its own but what do you wear to keep slightly warmer without ruining the look of your dress or outfit?

A bolero or shrug is the answer to so many evening and occasion wear dilemmas. They are great for travelling too and from the event but are also perfect for wearing the whole time including for a sit down meal. If you are a little self conscious about showing your arms, they are also great for covering them up when wearing a sleeveless dress. A bolero is a sort of cropped jacket and can either have long or short sleeves. A shrug is a looser and less structured type of cover up that is a cross between a shawl or wrap and a cardigan. The beauty of both of these cover ups is that they are short and so do not ruin the line of the dress or stop it from hanging properly. A shrug or bolero can even become a feature of your outfit in its own right especially if it has embroidery, beading or an interesting texture like crochet.

For an elaborate evening dress, you could opt for a plain or simple bolero or shrug that will not detract from the dress. Alternatively you could dress up a simple black dress with a beaded bolero or choose an evening or occasion dress with a matching bolero or shrug.

Boleros and shrugs can also work really well for everyday wear. Try wearing a brightly coloured shrug with jeans and a tunic top. Boleros and shrugs are particularly flattering for short or petite ladies as they play with proportions making the body look longer.

Every woman has at least one part of their body that they are not happy with and the thought of having it on display absolutely fills them with fear.  For some it is the prospect of having to wear a bikini on the beach and show off their tummy whilst for others the notion of having to wear a short skirt and having to have their legs on display terrifies them.

However, it would be fair to say that there are ways around these aforementioned problems.  For instance when it comes to the tummy area there are plenty of ways of resolving this problem.  In recent years there has a huge surge in the number of products available, which tackle this problem area.  It is possible to buy underwear which tones, smoothes and flattens the tummy depending on the demands of the wearer.  In addition to this much of this technology is now available in beach wear and it is also possible to substitute a bikini for a swimsuit when on the beach or wear a sarong.  Whilst those women who feel they cannot wear short skirts have a multitude of other options available to them, all of which mean they do not have to show off their legs.  It is possible to simply opt for trousers or longer length skirts and still look fashionable.

However, there is one body part which many women up and down the country absolutely dread having on display and that is the tops of their arms, otherwise known as bingo wings.  This is a problem area for many women and one which becomes even more problematic throughout the summer months.  With the summer comes the good weather and consequently a change in the design of clothing.  Many of the tops available during summer are light, delicate and, unfortunately for some, sleeveless or short sleeved.  As a result many women shy away from these tops and consequently they shy away from a number of stylish and fashionable design options.

However, women should not shy away from such tops, rather they should simply invest in a good cover up for the tops of the arms in the form of boleros and shrugs.  Boleros and shrugs are the ultimate in cover ups as they do not seem as chunky as cardigans and consequently are perfect for the summer.  Moreover, boleros and shrugs now come in a wide range of colours, patterns and designs meaning that any woman is certain to find a cover up to suit both her tastes and wardrobe.  Boleros and shrugs are also the ideal accompaniment for evening or formal wear.  For instance when shopping for an outfit to wear to a wedding many of the dresses are sleeveless, however often the addition of a cardigan makes the ensemble appear too heavy or dowdy.  Boleros and shrugs are slightly more sophisticated and as such can easily be worn with such formal wear.

No matter what the occasion or what the outfit choice there is always a cover up available to ensure that every woman can feel confident and comfortable.
