Weddings are a great excuse to splash out on a new outfit – something eye-catching and beautiful – but it’s important not to dress so well that you’ll outshine the bride!

When picking out occasion dresses for events like weddings, there are some simple “dos” and “don’ts” that will ensure you make a statement without overdoing it.

Of course, summer weddings will probably involve a lot of out-door time, so it’s important to choose something you can look brilliant in, whilst keeping cool.

It’s also worth not going for anything too formal – depending on the invite – and perhaps choosing something you can layer so you can take off, or put on, a top if the temperature changes.

Floral colours are massively trendy this year, and it’s important to avoid wearing all white, or black, for a wedding. Going for something with floral print, or in flowery colours, is always a safe bet.

Don’t pluck out a long gown unless the wedding is likely to run into the evening, and make sure you pick out a hat that will allow you to see the bride, whilst stopping the sun getting in your eyes.

Obviously, white is a no-no: it’s a colour reserved exclusively for the bride on her big day. Heavy make-up, fancy tights or hosiery and exposing too much flesh should be avoided too.

Wide-leg trousers have sauntered in and out of fashion over the last few years.

Their previous incarnation focussed around combat pants but with the 70s style revival this summer, tailored, wide trousers are proving to be a popular look for women’s clothing – whether you’re aiming for a floaty office look or looking for something relaxed for a holiday.

Wide-leg trousers look great with a masculine look – pair with a jacket for a striking silhouette.

For holidays, patterned or coloured palazzo pants can be a great addition – with soft, floating fabric and plenty of airspace to keep you cool abroad.

Wide-fitting jeans are perhaps one to avoid – these often end up looking baggy and slouchy without any hint of style.

But you can try mixing wide-leg trousers with an array of clothes for every effect from evening wear to casual.

Donning a pair of heels will give your legs and bottom a great shape in wide-leg trousers, accentuating your waist and hips. Flats are great for a more masculine look – add wide-leg trousers to a fitted trouser suit to look strong and stylish.

A flowing shirt or blouse can look stunning with wide trousers – but get a great belt to pinch any billowing material in to your waist.

To really get the 70s look, dust off some platforms or big wedges, and go for colourful accessories to look playful, fun and flirty.

The latest catwalk trends can sometimes be a little too much for ladies of a certain age.

Anyone over 25 would probably forgiven for not investing in any of this season’s high street trends, such as hotpants, short-suits and neon beachwear.

But the high-fashion shows for autumn/winter 2011-12 have unveiled a great look that’s absolutely perfect for over 50s women’s clothing: matching tunics with trousers.

Tunics are eye-catching, stylish and best of all, give your body a great shape through loose, flowing material. Rather than hugging your figure – and perhaps showing off the bits you’d rather not show off – tunics provide a great figure with little effort.

Whilst many high-fashion styles have featured off-the-shoulder looks with choker fasteners around the neck, t-shirt style tunics will work just as well.

Match with a pair of loose, floaty trousers and don’t worry about how the clothing hangs – it is supposed to.

Chic black tunics and trousers could be a great formal outfit or occasional dress, or spice it up with something bold, colourful and patterned to really put a statement to your style.

It’s a phrase many mothers have muttered at their teenage offspring: “You’re not going out dressed like that!”

But it seems that when it comes to women’s clothing, that saying has been confined to the past, according to a new study. In fact, teenage daughters now may be more likely to scream it at their mothers!

Mums aged 40 and over are increasingly turning to their daughters for inspiration, according to research published in the Journal of Consumer Behaviour.

Whilst busy mums have no time to monitor the latest trends and styles, their switched-on daughters do: and therefore copying them is the quickest way to choose a trendy new outfit.

Whilst celebrity lookalike mum and daughter combos have been featured countlessly in the media, the new research is the first to confirm it’s a nationwide phenomena. It looked at 300 mums and daughters, and found adolescent girls were a key influence on their mother’s make-up, clothes and hairstyles.

Whilst the garish, often day-glo colours associated with one of this summer’s key trends, colour-blocking, were perhaps a little much for over 50s ladies’ fashion, the stark, bright palatte will dissipate somewhat as autumn/winter comes around.

Already, catwalks are beginning to fill up with the biggest and best trends for the coming season.

And whilst two predicted trends – hark-backs to the 1940s and androgynous suits – may be too much for the older generation, one particular autumn/winter staple will be a cracking addition to any wardrobe.

Jewel tones, or jewel colours, will be big this season in a huge way. Think emerald, jade, ruby and sapphire. Think silks, shawls and accessories.

Jewel tones are rich and enticing. Best of all, they’re really flattering – especially if you’ve got a post-summer tan.

Amethyst purple has such a rich glow it’s hard not to look great, and jewel tones aren’t about creating a striking look – it’s about the right depth of colour.

Sparkly jewel outfits are okay, but for something truly demure and flattering, go for something deep, rich and eye-catching, whether it’s a handbag, pair of shoes, or a silky dress for that special occasion.

When it comes to over 50s women’s clothing, a new survey has found shopping for jeans stresses women out more than any other item of clothing.

The research, by an online retail network, found 67% of women said shopping for jeans was the “most stressful” shopping experience.

Of those, 43% said jean shopping was even more stressful than moving home – traditionally one of the most stress-inducing tasks.

Jeans are a timeless fashion staple – great for everyday wear and ideal for altering for going out.

However, as jeans have evolved, many over 50s have felt left behind – especially with skinny fit, hipsters and baggier jeans becoming trendy.

The best advice is not to panic – most people look great in jeans. There’s no need to buy small and try to squeeze into a pair of denims that don’t fit – go for something that you feel comfortable in, and let the denim do the work for you.

Sailor-style is never out of fashion in the summer.

Stripey tops, blue leggings and boat shoes can create a playful, relaxed look which just screams seaside.

Nautical fashion is a safe staple for summer and buying just a few items can let you mix and match with other women’s clothing to create several different looks.

Whilst stripey vest-tops may no longer be a flattering consideration, stripey jackets can look great. Opting for a fitted style will tuck-in your waist and wearing a jacket over a bright top – even red – can create a truly nautical outfit. Remember, your staple colours are red, white and blue, but mixing in yellows, and different shades can add variation.

Boat shoes are back in fashion for the summer – simple flats with little embellishment but lots of practical applications – they’re made to help with grip and are perfect for the beach or a cruise!

Blue leggings, or ankle-rolled trousers, are instantly recognisable sea-faring wear, match with a red belt with a nautical buckle to maximise the look.

The research, by an online retail company, found many bosses disliked plunging necklines, and said cleavage was an office no-no.

Dressing down was given a dressing down by company managers, whilst those who dressed up too much were criticised, too.

Women who dress to impress, without going over the top, are likely to meet bosses’ sartorial expectations, the survey found.

Bosses responding to the survey highlighted the ten worst office clothing faux pas.

They included showing too much cleavage, wearing clothing that had holes or was frayed, wearing slipperboots by UGG, denim jeans, facial piercings, underwear on show, fake tan and “orange faces”, over-the-top stilettos, brash jewellery, and wedge shoes.

Unsurprisingly, female bosses were particularly critical of cleavage. 60% said daring necklines were the worst fashion crime in their office.

For women who experienced the 70s the first time around, there may still be some choice items leftover in your wardrobe.

There’s plenty of modern, new 70s-themed styles to go for, too.

But either way, it’s worth thinking about how to pull off the look without seeming like you got stuck in the decade of disco.

Jeans and trousers with a wide fit are a great place to start – get the waist properly tailored and they will flatter your figure immensely.

For larger sizes, go for un-waisted, flowing trousers – maybe in linen – to keep cool and give yourself a great figure.

White and lace are big too, so try combining long, flowing dresses with lacy details, and go for 70s accessories, like flowers and bright colours.

With animal print and colour blocking both very much in fashion, you can afford to experiment a bit to get the perfect mix for you.
