A new survey has highlighted the kind of women’s clothing bosses think is acceptable, and unacceptable, for the workplace.

The research, by an online retail company, found many bosses disliked plunging necklines, and said cleavage was an office no-no.

Dressing down was given a dressing down by company managers, whilst those who dressed up too much were criticised, too.

Women who dress to impress, without going over the top, are likely to meet bosses’ sartorial expectations, the survey found.

Bosses responding to the survey highlighted the ten worst office clothing faux pas.

They included showing too much cleavage, wearing clothing that had holes or was frayed, wearing slipperboots by UGG, denim jeans,  facial piercings, underwear on show, fake tan and “orange faces”, over-the-top stilettos, brash jewellery, and wedge shoes.

Unsurprisingly, female bosses were particularly critical of cleavage. 60% said daring necklines were the worst fashion crime in their office.

The 1970s are back – flowing kaftans, throw-overs, shawls and airy bottoms.

For women who experienced the 70s the first time around, there may still be some choice items leftover in your wardrobe.

There’s plenty of modern, new 70s-themed styles to go for, too.

But either way, it’s worth thinking about how to pull off the look without seeming like you got stuck in the decade of disco.

Jeans and trousers with a wide fit are a great place to start – get the waist properly tailored and they will flatter your figure immensely.

For larger sizes, go for un-waisted, flowing trousers – maybe in linen – to keep cool and give yourself a great figure.

White and lace are big too, so try combining long, flowing dresses with lacy details, and go for 70s accessories, like flowers and bright colours.

With animal print and colour blocking both very much in fashion, you can afford to experiment a bit to get the perfect mix for you.

New research has revealed a guilty holiday secret for over 50s women – most spend more on women’s clothing for the holiday than they do on the trip itself.

The research, by an online retailer, found more than 85% of women over 50 spent £1,500 on holiday clothes – whilst the cost of an average trip abroad is just £677 per person.

More than 50% of women took more than ten different outfits away with them, with 96% taking at least five pairs of shoes.

Around 91% said they took five different handbags with them on holiday.

Not surprisingly, 65% said they didn’t even wear half the clothes they took on holiday, with 72% saying they over-packed.

Taking so many clothes on holiday is a waste of time and effort, especially if you don’t end up wearing half of them. Picking the right items, which can be mix and matched, is essential for ‘good’ packing.

Linen is a great holiday materials, is light and cool and easy to pack. Taking one daytime and one evening dress should do the trick, along with a couple of cardigans, tops and t-shirts, and try to stick to three handbags and three pairs of shoes – sandals, flip-flops and something classy for the evenings should suffice.

Miniskirts divided opinion, sent pulses racing, and drew more than the odd stare from the passing gentlemen.

Whilst many may wish they could still pull on a teeny mini and go out in public, the fact is, many young women try to avoid them too, at the moment.

They enjoyed something of a resurgence a few years ago, but this summer’s style has emphasised short shorts over micro skirts.

For older and plus-size women’s clothing, though, midi is the new mini.

There are ways you can dress that will get as many admiring stares as a pair of pins in a miniskirt, but without having to resort to baring your legs up to your hips.

Mid-length skirts are ideal for showing off your calves and ankles – they are slimming, help shape your figure and go great with wedges or heels.

The same applies for coats – jackets which end just below the waist look great, flatter your figure and stop your legs looking short and dumpy like longer jackets can.

Layering is a great way to add texture to your outfits.

Plus, practically, allows you to prepare for whatever the changeable British weather decides to throw your way.

There’s a lot you can do with women’s clothing to tailor fashions and designs to your figure and taste.

Start with a linen shirt, and pop enough buttons to show off a great t-shirt, tank-top or bikini top underneath. This looks stylish and relaxed, is practical as you can whip the shirt on or off as necessary, and can be worn at the beach, or for a night out.

Shawls and scarves are a great way to get warm quickly if the sun disappears, whilst providing a dash of colour, an air of style, and help to draw attention to your face.

Leggings under skirts or shorts can be hit and miss, but with the right colours, and right top, this can be a great way to look relaxed and summery whilst staying warm. It’s also great if you’re not massively confident about bearing your legs – just don’t go for neon tights or you’ll end up attracting attention to all the wrong places.

Wearing polo shirts, vests or t-shirts over long-sleeved tops was a staple of grunge fashion in the 1990s, and it hasn’t gone off-trend since. Mainly because it’s so simple and practical to achieve, and can be a great way to accentuate your figure.
