We all have days where we don’t feel comfortable in our clothes from a bit of extra weight, but there are clever dressing ways which allow you to dress slimmer.

Wearing one single colour from your head to your toe will make your silhouette appear slimmer as well as making you appear taller. Columns of colour are a classic way to look slimmer. Wearing different tones of the same colour for example a grey cardigan, grey jeans and ankle boots is especially effective as grey is a neutral tone.

Vertical prints are another way to make you look like you’re carrying less weight. Ditch any floral patterns and go for big vertical stripes or pinstripes. Horizontal stripes will obviously have the opposite effect to these should be avoided.

Make sure you don’t try and hide any fleshy bits under shapeless womens clothing. This will give the impression that there is more hidden that there actually is. Shop for clothes which skim the body, and you can look fabulous, even on an off day.

Ok so let’s face it, there is possibly a stereotype of what the more mature lady should wear and jeans perhaps wouldn’t necessarily be the first thing that comes into our heads.

But why should we stop wearing certain things just to conform the ideologies of others?

The answer to this question should be for the wearer to decide – not what we are told is right and wrong.

As you may recall, the over 50s generation were, in fact, very fervent adopters of jeans in their youth, so why should we have to stop after a certain age.

Looking back on photographs of you when you were younger, you will probably find that in every one you had a pair of jeans on, to be more accurate you probably had a pair for every occasion!

If you still love wearing jeans, here are a few tips to help you remain stylish and trendy whilst keeping in-line with your maturity.

  • Try and avoid light denim at all costs, even the younger generation have trouble pulling off this look. Stick to darker denims such as navy and black-it looks more stylish and darker denims compliment those with larger figures.
  • Stretch denim is a great way to feel comfortable and a great way to look good. Nobody will know if you are wearing stretch denim-it could do wonders for those problem areas that other non-stretch jeans can’t.
  • Go jeans shopping and try a few different styles and shades on. You could have been wearing the same pair of jeans for years that may have suited you at the time, but today a different style or shape could be the new look you have been looking for.

Whatever you decide there really is no right or wrong answer, looking and feeling good is the most important part of womens fashion, and only you can decide on that!

While you may want to wear all the latest trends, there are certain styles of womens clothing ladies over 50 should avoid.

The most obvious is short skirts. No matter how slim your legs are, short skirts are incredibly unflattering on older women. Keep skirt lengths to the knee and try to wear a small heel to elongate the leg.

Sleeve-less tops are another no-no, as the tops of the arms can sag and become loose with age. If you insist on wearing a sleeve-less top or dress, add a short-sleeved cardigan or shawl to hide any imperfections.

When it comes to jeans, go for figure-hugging, well-fitting styles. Bootcut styles are the most flattering and always make sure the waistband sits on the waist. Low rise or hipster jeans should be left to the young.

Also try to avoid very low cut tops paired with stacks of jewellery. Alone, these are incredibly ageing but together they look tacky. Stick to scoop neck or V-neck tops with one piece of jewellery at a time.

By following these simple rules, you can be sure to always look stylish and classy, whether you are going to a party or just visiting the shops.
